PG Marcus Garrett (Hillcrest – 2017)
Garrett finished the weekend where he left off Saturday. He showed true leadership on Sunday afternoon. Marcus controlled games with his hard nosed defense and pure toughness. He guarded the best player each team had and completely took them out of the game. Offensively Marcus used his big frame to score at the basket when he beat defenders with off the dribble combining that with the tough shots he made from deep usually coming off picks made him too hard to guard. Garrett scored 30 in the championship game taking home the MVP honors and leading Hillcrest to the R-B Shootout championship win.
SG Denis Alibegovic (Downers Grove South – 2017)
Denis started out Sunday with a bang. He did whatever he could to keep DGS rolling. In a matchup against St. Joes the 6’4” shooter did more than that. He got to the rim at times, rebounded his own shots, and created fouls to keep Downers Grove South close in their matchup. DGS lost the game but Denis finished with 31 Points.
PG Cameron Donatlan (West Aurora – 2018)
The athletic Donatlan put his team on his back in a game against Homewood Flossmoor. His relentlessness attacking basket proved to be to much for the smaller H-F defenders. Cameron looks to have added muscle which makes him look even more intimidating. He still is working on a consistent shot but until then he is good at one thing. Getting to the rim and going through guys who meet him there. Cameron has a tremendous upside for a rising junior. Expect more excitement coming from West Aurora in the near future.
SG Henry Trelenberg (Riverside Brookfield – 2017)
Trelenburg went through a stretch on Sunday where he was on fire. In Riverside Brookfield’s matchup against Plainfield East he made 8 three pointers with a mix of pull up shots and tough layups in traffic. At 6’2 Henry is a specialist at making shots and can become a even better weapon once he works on his handle. Trelenburg finished with 31 points.
PG Marquise Walker (St. Joeseph – 2019)
The freshman phenom who was taking St.Joe’s high school by storm was really good on Sunday. He’s a stocky point guard who gets to his spot on the court effectively. Walker has a great handle and toughness to mix it up in traffic when looking to score. Marquise does a good job controlling the pace for Legendary coach Pingatore. With Walker as the lead player the next few years Joes will be in good hands.
PF Christian Negron (Larkin – 2017)
After having a rough Saturday going 0-3 Negron made up for it Sunday in the 4th place bracket. The athletic forward was all over the court changing shots, rebounding, and blocking anything near him. He plays with a great motor. Christian also changed the game by cleaning up everything around the basket on the offensive end. Something you are sure to see when watching Negron is thunderous dunks usually of missed shots. He had a high of 16 pts in his matchup against St. Patrick.
PG Nojel Eastern (Evanston – 2017)
Eastern started his campaign for player of the year this weekend. He did everything for the Wildkits. Always aware of his matchup Nojel created for teammates as well as for himself. He has a high I.Q. when the ball is in his hands. He can post smaller players and attack bigger forwards when switched on to him. In every game he scored double figures this weekend and was on pace again before leaving the semifinals vs Hillcrest with leg cramps. Nojel is poised to have a huge year.
PG Evan Gilyard (Simeon – 2017)
It’s no secret that this years Wolverine squad will be led by Gilyard and his leadership was huge in a the R-B shootout marquee matchup against Curie. Evan did a nice job at scoring from all areas. He mixed up his attacks depending on what the defense showed him. He got to the rim when they played him tight. Evan knocked down shot after shot when defenders went under the screen. He was the aggressor in the guard matchup with Curie’s Elijah Joiner. Gilyard also created enough contact to get to the line several times especially when it mattered down the stretch of the game. Evan created a touch foul that sent him to the line to give Simeon the win.
PG Ayo Dosumnu (Morgan Park – 2018)
After his huge scoring games on Saturday Ayo again took the lead for Morgan Park. In the matchup against Simeon he took full advantage of a tired Wolverine team. Getting to the basket at will finding teammates for several dunks Ayo didn’t care that Simeon had just played a tough game before, he was out to show he was the best guard on in the Red South. Ayo led the Mustangs to the championship before falling to Hillcrest. He led them in scoring in both games with 21 and 17 in the final.
