C Ryan Davis (Conant – 2018)
One of the most surprising players this weekend at Riverside Brookfield was Ryan Davis. Davis is big 6’8 center who takes up space and knows how to use it. Davis was scoring at will on Saturday. He cashed on most of his points inside the paint. Ryan could finish over his left and right shoulder, often scoring through defenders. He showed how good his hands were when creating contact. Davis wasn’t limited to just the paint though at times he stepped out and drained a couple of long range shots a few were threes. He led Conant in scoring this weekend with gamehighs of 26, 27, and 16. Davis is name to watch more if you are a low D1 or D2 school.
F David Hunt (Kenwood – 2017)
A physical wing who had a breakout game against Geneva. David played the passing lanes well deflecting passes turning them into thunderous dunks. Hunt plays the game with a chip on his shoulder, something you don’t see much in high school basketball. He is a stretch forward who can make threes and when needed he can overpower players inside. He had 6 dunks and led the Broncos with 26 points.
F Messiah Jones (Simeon – 2018)
Messiah had a great game against Curie on Sunday afternoon that shouldn’t go under the radar. Jones would not be overshadowed by the guard matchup (Gilyard vs Joiner). He dominated the play around the basket for Simeon. He slammed home several assists from teammates Gilyard and Horton-Tucker. Messiah did a good job blocking shots on the defensive end as well. Jones will be a huge factor for the Wolverines this season this weekend was just a preview.
SG Nimari Burnett (Morgan Park – 2020)
Nimari made his high school basketball summer debut this weekend and he played well. The incoming freshman didn’t seemed rattled at all against the older competition. Burnett has deep range on his shot knocking down some deep NBA range three pointers. For an 8th grader he plays with confidence already and will be an impact player for Morgan Park right away.
PG Jacob Keller (Fenwick – 2017)
Jacob has a pretty good weekend for Fenwick. The athletic guard did a little bit of everything. He attacked often using his athleticism to finish at the rim. Keller showed he’s also improving his outside shot as well connecting on a couple of mid-range shots. With Mike Smith graduating Jacob will run the Friars ship this upcoming season and I have no doubt that coach Malnati will have him ready.
SF Terry Smith Jr. (Curie – 2017)
Terry Smith had a solid outing Sunday vs Simeon. Smith was instrumental offensively from 15 feet. At 6’5 he has a solid frame that coaches are intrigued about. Terry’s play is very gritty and he often keeps things simple. Smith made several jumps shots from the middle of the key. He was able to keep his team in the game knocking down very pivotal shots. His progression is one to monitor over the next few months if you are a small college program.
PG Ramar Evans (Loyola – 2017)
Another talent that shouldn’t go under the radar this weekend is Ramar Evans. His steady play at the guard spot lifted Loyola in some big games. Saturday in a later game Ramar lead the charge in a win against a Morgan Park. He dictated the pace of the game trusting his teammates and running sets all the way though. Evans is a unique player. He has a college ready body and he shows poise when he’s playing on and off the ball a skillset that’s rarely celebrated. He scored 16 in the win. The next day he had another solid performance against Marian Catholic where he score 20 but ended up with a loss.
SF Talen Horton-Tucker (Simeon – 2018)
Talen had a good showing this weekend. He made some big plays down the stretch of the Curie – Simeon matchup on Sunday. Horton-Tucker is a big guard who has great handle and can shoot with the best in the state. In one of the key plays of the game Talen stripped Elijah Joiner in the backcourt for an easy lay-up and a lead. He finished the game with 13 pts in the win.
C Jalen Shaw (Larkin – 2018)
The 6’8 big man is usually overshadowed by his teammate Christian Negron. But on Sunday Shaw was the big man who led the Royals. Jalen has made a huge strides in his game. He has developed a pretty good shot showing good form for a big his size. Shaw might not ever be as mobile as Negron but he is smart defensively and alters shots very often. He scored a game high 19 pts against Conant.
