The versatile 6’6″ Kitchens has been an impact player for the Wildcats, leading them to a 24-3 record and a berth in the Class 2 district championship game in 2016. Playing at a small school does not bother Kitchens. Quite the opposite. It is a motivating factor as he continues to develop as a player.
“A lot of people think that because I’m from a small school, I’m not going to get looked at, but that doesn’t mean anything to me,” Kitchens said. “It makes me want to work harder.”
As a sophomore, Kitchens averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds in leading New Bloomfield to its 24-victory season. He was a force in the post for the Wildcats throughout the season. The Wildcats were ranked among the top Class 2 teams in the state throughout the season.
“It was a fun season,” Kitchens said. “We were able to win two tournaments during the season.”
With the graduation of some talented guards, Kitchens expects to spent more time on the perimeter. Kitchens got a chance to display his all-around game at the University of Central Missouri Team Camp in Warrensburg. Kitchens scored in the low post, but he also handled the ball quite and bit and knocked down several mid-range jumpers. He also did a nice job of passing out of double teams to open teammates.
“I’ve been working on my jump shot and my dribbling skills quite a bit,” Kitchens said. “Those were my weaknesses last season. My strengths are driving and getting to the basket and scoring in the post. I’ve also been working on my 3-point shot.
During the summer, Kitchens plays for the Mid-Mo Elite 16U team. In June, he was invited to play at the Tulsa University Elite Camp.
“Playing at the camp was a great experience because I got a chance to play against some very good players,” Kitchens said. “It has made me so much better. Hopefully, in July, I hope to get looked at by some colleges.”
