Ashland is currently the sole team who has expressed interest in the 2018 prospect. However, people like McCollum don’t wait for opportunities. If his mental approach continues, he’s going to make his dreams of playing college basketball happen.
“I believe I’m going to end up D-I, with the work I’m putting in,” McCollum said.
In preparing for a more expanded role with Canton McKinley next season, McCollum has been training with his cousins, overseas professional player, Errick and, Portland Trailblazers guard, CJ McCollum.
“I’m training with my cousins Errick and CJ McCollum, just trying to get my body right … Working with a coach in Michigan, making me a better player and point guard for TNBA,” McCollum said.
CJ McCollum’s story (from Lehigh to borderline NBA All-Star) is inspiring for players all over the country. So, how does having him in close proximity help Deontae?
“They always told me, ‘always be aggressive.’ Play with a chip on your shoulder. Ya know, because they weren’t recruited as high as the people they thought they were better than,” McCollum said. “Every play I’m trying to do everything better than you, diving for the loose balls. Trying to show the college coaches that I have more heart … Just trying to outwork everyone who is ranked higher than me.”

McCollum translates a passionate off-season training program by being a leader on the court.
“Intelligent lead guard who can score the ball. Run a team. Play good defense when we’re on defense. And just be a leader.”
His ball-control, energy, and scoring abilities stick out on the highlight tape. He is looking to utilize those skills by getting to certain spots on the court quicker.
“I’m trying to get more explosive as far as jumping. And just getting a faster first step.”
McCollum believes Canton McKinley will surprise fans this season, considering they have a “young team.”
Once July comes, McCollum will be surrounded by a bevy of talent with TNBA 16U.
His support system is topped off by being a part of a basketball family, including underestimated prospects who made a habit of proving themselves once given the opportunity. Deontae has a legitimate chance to continue that McCollum-trend.
