Continue ReadingWharton 2019 guard Darin Green Jr. comes from a very athletic family that was led by his father, who starred on the George Washington basketball team. His uncles David (football) and Derek (basketball) played at Duke and North Carolina State around the same time. Now, Green Jr. is trying to make a name for himself as a rising sophomore. He has the frame at 6’3″, 160 lbs. and is going to get stronger as he grows into his body.
Green Jr. had this to say about his freshman season at Wharton where he split time between JV and varsity.
“This season was a good learning experience for me on the varsity level. Through hard work, I was able to work my way up and get more playing time in games as the season went on. I learned all of the plays and I learned to compete no matter what. The older guys didn’t take it easy on me and it forced me to step up and compete every single day. Playing against them definitely made me a tougher, stronger and more physical all-around player.”
How would he break down his own game?
“I handle the ball well and can bring the ball up the court which helps relieve a lot of pressure off of the point guards I play with. I am very athletic and I love to jump and dunk. I am a good shooter, especially from 3-point range. I have worked on rebounding so I box out well and get rebounds. I’m looking to continue to improve my defense and mid-range game. I’m getting better day by day, game by game.”
Green Jr. plays for coach Edward “Boobie” Francis on the Nike South Beach travel team.
“It’s going pretty good. I am pretty versatile and make every minute useful by bringing all my ability to the table for my team. I also do personal training that includes strength and conditioning training 2-3 times a week. I love putting in the hard work. I am always working on my game and giving my all so that I can get better. It gets tough at times trying to balance school and my 3.8 GPA, but I know all of my hard work will pay off.”
The Class of 2019 prospect doesn’t have any offers yet, but he says his top schools of interest are South Florida, Florida, North Carolina and Florida State. He should start to generate looks from numerous Division-II and Division-III programs this fall.
Even though college is far away, Green Jr. already knows that he wants to become a pediatric orthopedic doctor studying as a pre-med major.
