He shined at the state tournament last year at Wells Fargo Arena as an undersized sophomore who was clearly the leader and best player on his team. And now he’s earned a spot on one of the nation’s best 16U squads with the 16U Iowa Barnstormers.
Stevens has been hearing from Division one through Division III schools in the form of elite camp invited so far.
“I’ve been getting some mail and some emails and stuff. It’s come very recently, like in the last couple of months. I have camp invites from Central Michigan, Arkansas Tech, Central from Pella, Augustana from South Dakota and that’s about it so far,” said Stevens, Iowa’s 16th ranked 2018.
“I mean, I’m sure some coaches see my height and maybe feel they don’t want to start to recruit this early. But I feel like I have the skill to play, possibly, Division I basketball, even though I’m that short. I have the scoring ability to do it. I’ll always have to work on defense being that small though.”
Stevens added: “I’m not really worried too much about recruitment right now, I’m pretty sure it will start to come a lot more next year.”
A supremely skilled guard, who can score in bunches from dribble-drive and from outside, Stevens defined his game to PHI in his own words.
“I consider myself a shooter. And I like to run-and-gun down the floor. And I feel with the Barnstormers I’ve been really working on my distributing because I have so many great players on my team. In high school I still work on getting everyone involved, but when I need to take over a game I feel I can do that,” said Stevens who says playing with the supremely talented 16U ‘Stormers has been a good experience for him.
“It’s been fun. Joe Wieskamp and Joey Hauser, I mean, any time I get them the ball they can take it and score. And it’s just been really fun to play with this team.”
After his 16U summer ends, Stevens will be back in the gym working with his Rams, a team that is loaded with 2018 and 2019 talent.
“It’s discussed a lot,” said Stevens. “We all knew we were pretty good last season, especially once we played at Wahlert and beat them. The ultimate goal in the next couple of years is to win a state championship, honesty. So we have some pretty high goals for ourselves.”
