We’ve seen Kern plenty now between high school ball and grassroots ball, and it’s now a certainly; he’s one of the best point guards in the state. Not only is he a smart floor-general, but he’s a lethal shooter. He sees the floor well, and seldom makes mistakes – oh, and he scored a 35 on his ACT.
2018 Hunter Strait, 6′ PG, Team Iowa (Cedar Rapids Washington)
We knew Strait could ball, but he’s elevated his game to a whole new level. He’s a slick point guard with a tight handle and can create his own looks, but sets teammates up for success adeptly too. What became evident last month was Strait’s leadership ability, he genuinely cares about his teammates’ success, and he does whatever it tales to make himself and his teammates successful.
2017 Jake Eilers, 6’4 G/F, Iowa Dynasty (Cedar Rapids Prairie)
Eilers broke out in a big way last month while starring for one of the surprise teams of the spring Iowa Dynasty 17U. His great shooting is what has been most striking, and with his great height and length he’s able to see over defenders where he reads defenses exceptionally well. Look for him to have a breakout season with the Hawks next winter.
2018 AJ Green, 6’1 PG, Iowa Barstormers (Cedar Falls)
Usually we don’t put players in stock-risers articles back-to-back months, but we had to make an exception here. What AJ Green has been doing this spring has been unparalleled from any player in the state. And the silky smooth point guard has gone from mid-major sure thing, to what looks like a possible high-major prospect.
2017 Tirique Randolph, 6’1 PG, Iowa Mavericks (Davenport Central)
Randolph is a flat-out play-maker who is one of the more crafty and creative passers in the state. He is a true pass-first point guard, and that’s what he’s best at – though is is capable of scoring the ball if need be. He’s got a sturdy frame on some pretty decent height. Check him out.
2019 Tyreke Locure, 5’9 PG, Kingdom Hoops (Des Moines North)
Just a sophomore-to-be, we’ve already written extensively about the uncanny ability that the Des Moines North youngster possesses. What stood out last month was that even playing up with the 16U Kingdom Hoops Elite squad, it was very clear he was the most talented player on the floor. When we saw him play with the 15U squad he looked completely out of his league. He’s in-line for a very special career with the Polar Bears.
2019 Kylan Smallwood, 6’2 G, N/A (Creston)
Probably the biggest surprise of last month was this small-school hidden gem. Surprising because he has no grassroots affiliation, he just plays with his Creston team in the offseason (expect that to change next spring). He’s a good-sized guard who can put it on the floor and shoot it, sees the floor well, competes, and is a leader. What more could you want?
2019 Dakota Rold, 6’6 C, Tryon Gym (Exira-EHK)
One of the more intriguing young big-men in the state, Dakota Rold was strikingly good each time we saw him last month. What’s striking is his great length, which paired with some decent height makes him an elite offensive rebounder and shot-blocker. Though there’s much to be desired offensively, his defense and rebounding alone make him a youngster to keep an eye on.
2017 Elijah Hazekamp, 6’5 SF, Iowa Barnstormers (Bishop Heelan)
The Bishop Heelan product isn’t showy or flashy, but he just gets it done. He can score, rebound and defend with the best of them, and he has some decent skill and athleticism that paired with his competitiveness and feel for the game make him one of 2018’s most impactful prospects.
2019 Thomas Faber, 6’2 PG, All Iowa Attack (Dowling)
Coming through the ranks at Dowling is this supremely skilled and good-sized combo guard. He is the best player and leader of one of Iowa’s best 15U teams, All Iowa Attack Red. And has some great mentors to show him the way at Dowling with Joey Kern and Sam Ingoli.
