A staple in the first weekend of June, it’s usually jam packed with both in state and out of state schools looking to get a kickstart on next season and this weekend was hardly different. Here is a look at a handful of prospects who performed quite well early Saturday morning.
2017
Josh Anderson (6’5 SG, Madison Prep) – Anderson scored early and often in the first half of a runaway against Shaw. Numerous dunks on the break and showed off his pull up jumper that continues to improve. Length on defense was a handful as becomes more and more dialed in on that end.
Brooks Murrell (6’5 F, Archbishop Hannan) – Murrell proved he can knock down shots and has extremely sneaky athleticism with multiple blocks on the defensive end. He floats through the lane effortlessly when attacking the rim as well. In P&R defensive situations, his ability to hard hedge or switch completely makes it tough on ball handlers.
Lamarq Williams (6’5 F/C, Scotlandville) – Williams has great footwork in the post and continues to improve his frame. The soft touch from 12-15 foot and in make him a tough match-up for anyone. Can put it on the floor as well. Defensively he defends with length and IQ.
Jordan Foster (6’9 F/C, Comeaux) – Foster was determined to show off perimeter skills against the Houston Phenoms and even knocked down a 3 early in the game which set the bench on fire. He’s still best known for his defensive work and protecting the rim at an extremely high level.
Melvin Davis (6’9 C, SWLA Homeschool) – Davis is new to the team and there is very little known about him. On the court he shows off solid awareness and has the ability to move as well as you’d like a man his size too. Once he develops more comfort with post moves, he’ll be a prospect to watch.
2018 / 2019
Jharon Whitfield (6’0 SG, Madison Prep, 2018) – One of the top shooters in the state, Whitfield’s range was very evident as he knocked down multiple long range jumpers beyond the college three point line. His handles are improving as well and he’s improving defensively.
Devaughn Thomas (6’6 SG/SF, Comeaux, 2018) – Thomas is coming into his own as his aggressiveness picks up. At one point he attempted to dunk over three defenders before getting fouled just proving he’s ready to take the next step. It’s only a matter of time before it all comes together.
Norris Williams (5’10 PG, Archbishop Hannan, 2019) – Williams is ready to run a team. Great things happen when he has the ball in his hands and it’s tough for Hannan when he doesn’t. Consistently makes the right decision and does little things on both ends. Great on ball defender and even grabs rebounds. Scores when he needs to.
