Continue ReadingSteph Curry and Klay Thompson have become one of the most dynamic duos in NBA history while lighting up opponents from long-range the past two seasons. Their prowess from deep has earned them the nickname “Splash Brothers” and a new generation of hoopsters have taken notice. Below we list Iowa’s best shooting duos – our own high school “Splash Brothers”
Newton: Garrett Sturtz/Connor Gholson
We caught a glimpse of what Gholson was capable of last winter when he torched Chariton for six 3s in a sub state final, five of then in the first half – and he was hitting with some serious range. Sturtz connected on just 24 3s last season as a sophomore, but look for that number to spike considerably this year as he becomes more of a focal point in the offense.
Ballard: Max Stoltz/Tyler Ihle
After seeing these two in action last weekend at the Grand View Team Camp, it was clear that they could be the best shooting duo in the state. Last season Stoltz was remarkable, connecting on 44 3s at a 49.4 percent clip. Ihle has a pure lefty stroke, one of the prettiest shots you’ll see. And they are so appropriately named on the Bombers.
Siouxland Christian: Jeremiah Bor Khat/Christian Kyles
These two connected for 132 combined 3s last season, more than anyone else on this list. They shot a combined 325 of triples last season, but made 41 percent of them – they were lethal then, and expect them to be even more proficient this season.
Glenwood: Nate Mohr/Christian Stanislav
Nate Mohr is the main sniper in this duo, he hit 73 3s at a 40 percent last season. Stanislav was a dead-eye shooter last season as a freshman, connecting on 41 percent of his 71 attempts. Look for Stanislav’s attempts to shoot up this season as he will be more of a key player. Mohr could be considered of the elite marksmen in the state if he has another season like last.
Grand View Christian: Stephenn Glenn/Grant DeMuelenaere
If we’re talking about the new-style of basketball and the onslaught of 3s that are being hoisted up, then this team epitomizes that. The Thunder shot 775 3s last season, second most in the state, and they were 25-2 so something tells me they’ll keep with that strategy. Glenn and DeMuelenaere made 103 triples combined, and were more accurate than any duo on this list; DeMuelenaere was 52 percent, Glenn was 45 percent.
North Scott: Bailey Basala/Corvon Seales
This duo could lead 4A in 3s this season. Basala is quickly re-emerging as one of the state’s best prospects — now with three Division I offers. And Seales was one of the state’s best sophomore shooters last season, hitting 43 3s at a 39 percent clip.
Des Moines Christian: Ben Juhl/Isaac Prewitt
Ben Juhl made a strong case for himself as 2017’s best shooter last season when he hit 45 percent of his 3s, and shot 60 percent from the field. He’s back. And so is Prewitt, who is the team’s shooting guard – and if last weekend’s Grand View Camp is any indicator is ready and willing to fire away. Rest assured Prewitt will improve upon his 31 makes from a season ago.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck: Joe Smoldt/Caden Kickbush
Joe Smoldt is good at everything, he’s a marvelous talent for the Rebels and Iowa Barnstormers. But he’s especially adept at shooting, which is why he made more 3s than anyone in the state last season (95). So we basically just found the second best shooter on the team, which is 2018 Kickbush – 26 3s on 39 percent shooting last season — and added the two to this list. Look for Smoldt to eclipse 100 3s this season, that hasn’t happened since Forest City’s Brett Putz — now a Wayne State assistant — did it in 2008.
