This kid is going to be really good for the Maroons in a couple years, but he’ll have to wait his turn first, it seems. With the likes of Sam Ingoli, Joey Kern and Sam Olson there this year, it will probably not be until next year when this well-built, skilled and smart player makes his mark.
2018 Sam Ingoli, Dowling (6’4 PG)
Iowa’s third ranked 2018, Ingoli came out and set the tone right away, connecting on two early 3s, and giving his team a 6-o lead in the championship game against Pella Christian. He scored 12 of his team’s first 14 in all, and then the game settled in and he became a bit more passive — choosing to work his teammates within the offense while maintaining a threatening presence on the floor. In the end he hit some clutch free-throws to help ice the game, and finished with a game-high 21 points.
2017 Levi Jungling, Pella Christian (5’10 PG)
Certainly one of the best athletes in the state, Jungling missed yesterday because of a football visit to Iowa. Today he was his usual dynamic self, leading his team to the championship game, and scoring 20 points against Dowling once he got there. Most of his points came from beyond the arc, where he is one of the best shooters from in the state. He’s got a fantastically quick release, and his speed and natural athleticism make any spot a threat for Jungling to get a shot off.
2017 David Kacmarynski (6’4 C)
The bid-bodied post is finally healthy after breaking his leg during football last season. He’s not the most athletic guy and may be a bit undersized for his position. But he’s got a large frame and creates space well with it. He can step out and hit a 15-footer, and he has an uncanny ability to get buckets over taller players around the rim.
2017 Solomon Clayton, Fort Dodge (6’4 SF)
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the day, we knew Clayton was good — we have him ranked 72nd in 2017 — but he was dominant today. He’s got a quick first step, good leaping ability, and is able to score from around the rim to the 3-point line. He told me after the game that he played in New York last weekend with Kingdom Hoops Elite 17U. He should be getting some Division II looks.
2018 Malcolm Clayton, Fort Dodge (5’10 PG)
He added some weight and that allows him to absorb contact better around the rim. What was most striking today was his ability to get clean looks off-the-dribble, and more often than not — a lot like fellow 2018 point guards AJ Green and Hunter Strait — his created jumper will go in.
2018 Wes Wynkoop, South Hamilton (6’1 F)
He’s a very undersized post, but is still a guy who has an ability to get buckets. All of his 10 points against Fort Dodge came at the rim, where he has a knack for being in the right place at the right time.
