Cade Moritz slammed home five dunks and scored a game-high 24 points helping the new-look Roughriders dismantle this Minnesota grassroots team. Another newcomer, Jaquon Hemphill, was dazzling at times while scoring 19 points. Even without star small forward Mhiyu Thomas this ‘Riders team was impressive. They could be one of the best teams in 4A next season.
11:00 — Des Moines North 62 vs Mount Vernon 54
Austin Ash scored 43 points in a game yesterday for the Mustangs, and went off for 32 in this one. But it wasn’t enough and the Polar Bears got a huge game from emerging small forward Dariq Myles who hit four 3s and scored a team-high 22 points. Tyreke Locure scored a quiet 21, but did hit a fade-away 23-footer off the bounce with 1:30 left to ice the game for his Polar Bears.
12:00 — Valley 70 vs MN Powerhouse I 81
This was a very talented bunch from Minnesota that the Tigers played, and it turned out to be their only loss of the day. Charley Crowley was exceptional for Valley, especially early, en route to a team-high 16 points. Quinton Curry put a scare into coaches and spectators when he went down in the second half with what looked initially like a serious knee injury. But he was able to walk-off the court with some help, and spent the rest of his game icing the injury. Austin Hinkle was very good for the Tigers, he scored 13 points.
1:00 — Des Moines North 70 vs Southeast Polk 44
The rout was on from the very beginning and by the end of the game both teams were getting guys who don’t regularly play some valuable time on the floor. Tyreke Locure was dazzling at times, and scored 3o points, the kid can score in bunches. It could be tough-sledding this season for Southeast Polk, which was playing without 2018 small forward Grant Arnold today (injury).
2:00 — Valley 63 vs Norwalk 48
Incoming freshman Bowen Born and established veteran Luke Vaske are quickly becoming one of the most dynamic backcourts in the state, but Valley is dynamic at every position. Blake Brinkmeyer flashed his immense length and athleticism with a standstill power jam. And Charley Crowley took a defensive rebound and dribbled the length of the court for a bucket + foul. When your 6-foot-8 bigs can do things like that, you’re going to be successful. Look for the Tigers to be in contention for another 4A title this winter.
