Top Squads
Des Moines North
North is perhaps the most dynamic team not just in this field, but in the state. Jal Bijiek is one of the best leapers in Iowa, and 2019 phenom Tyreke Locure led the state in assists and steals last season — so he can certainly get his electric small forward some good looks at the rim.
Iowa City West
In a similar loaded field at the Urbandale Team Camp earlier this month, the Trojans took home the title. It was top-ranked 2017 Connor McCaffery who was absolutely dominant at that tournament, and Devontae Lane was sensational too. Look out for some younger up-and-comers from the 2018 class, and top-ranked 2019 Patrick McCaffery.
Valley
Last season’s 4A state champs, Valley lost a lot, but returns a lot too. Quinton Curry is the Lebron James of Iowa high school hoops; a versatile, strong and dominate wing. Charley Crowley has developed into one of the state’s most complete bigs. And like West, the Tigers have a slew of talent coming through the ranks in 2018 and 2019,
Xavier
Another recent state champion, Xavier has two of Iowa’s best 2018s. Jackson Joens is a 6-foot-5 sharpshooter on the wing, and Matthew Mims is a skilled and savvy floor general at point guard. Down low is one of the state’s most polished bigs, the lengthy Max Techau.
Johnston
This is the team in the CIML that will turn some some heads next season. Dawson Jones and Grant Kramer are a huge one-two punch on the perimeter and down low. Both 6-foot-6 with some nice versatility, they will be the catalysts of this team. At the shooting guard spot, Camden Vander Zwaag is a stock-riser in 2018 who is becoming one of the state’s best shooters.
