Continue ReadingJoe Hird scored nearly a dozen points a game this past season for Bloomington Jefferson knocking out shots from the arc, playing a disciplined team game, and giving a consistent team effort. Those are all things that also represent the Minnesota Warriors who have been fantastic through April and May.
“I think the spring went well,” Joe said. “Our team is playing well together and winning a lot of good games. We’ve beat some good teams and when we’re hot we’re pretty tough for anyone to stop.”
The Warriors enter this week’s state tournament with wins over the 6th, 7th, 9th, 12th, and 13th ranked teams in the state amongst others with their only loss against a Minnesota team being the overtime fall to the Minnesota Fury in their first weekend of the year.
They won the NY2LA Spring Extravaganza, the Fury Shootout, and an event in Iowa plus the Warriors played well in the Comets Shootout and Battle at the Lakes.
Hird is a key member of that team and this team has helped him improve in many ways. He is also expecting to improve a great deal this coming summer.
“I’d like to improve my shooting percentage and handling the ball in pressure situations,” Joe said. “I’ve improved on going strong to the rim as well as communicating on defense and on ball defense.
“I’ll be working to add muscle and get faster for sure, and in the gym trying to get my shot and ball handling better.”
The 6-foot-2, 180 pound guard is also a standout wide receiver for the Jefferson Jaguars and between the two sports Hird will have plenty of college options.
“For basketball this month I’ve heard from Upper Iowa, Briar Cliff, Bemidji State, St. John’s, St Olaf, Bethel, Concordia. And for football I’ve gotten invited to North Dakota, Wisconsin, and Minnesota camps and I’m hearing from some NSIC and MIAC schools.”
Joe scored seven touchdowns and caught 43 passes for Jefferson in football. We’ve went through his talents on the court. Expect Hird’s athletic career to continue for several more years wherever he lands and whatever he will do.
