A top point guard in Ohio’s 2017 class, Griffin Lutz is on the verge of making a full recovery after ankle surgery last winter, and will be back in time to hopefully turn some heads this July.
The 6-foot prospect was playing very well last season before an ankle injury and subsequent surgery forced him out in February. But with some Division I schools still keeping tabs on him, he’s eager for the summer months, and the chance to pick up some offers.
“I still haven’t picked any offers up, but Ohio, Ball State and Belmont are the three main schools recruiting me right now. And Belmont is the heaviest. Other schools that were showing interest have tapered off, but I’m hoping they come back in July when they see me play,” said Lutz.
“I’m hoping to get down to Belmont soon for a visit, they’ve been calling and texting, emailing.”
The main goal for Lutz is to find a school that needs him, and where he’ll be able to make an immediate impact.
“I’m trying to pick up an offer from anyone that needs me,” he said. “I want to come in and play right away, so getting an offer from a team that needs me is my main focus.”
Since his surgery in February, Lutz has been rehabbing and says he’s added muscle and sharpened his shooting skills.
“I just started running, and soon I’ll be back on the court. And I’ve been lifting a lot, so my body has gotten stronger, and I’m gaining weight,” said Lutz. “I plan on playing in July for the live periods; that’s my main goal.”
Before the season-ending injury late in his junior campaign, Lutz had been playing great basketball. He says next year his role will be the same, with some added leadership.
“Things were going pretty well last season. I worked on my mid-range a lot and it showed. And I was distributing the ball pretty well and getting my teammates open looks,” said Lutz.
“I’m going to have to help the younger guys out next year, and we should be better than last year. I think we’ll make a pretty nice run,”
In the meantime Lutz will spend his summer playing with a supremely talented OBC 17U squad on the adidas Gauntlet.
“Playing with OBC in the Gauntlet should be really good for me this summer,” said Lutz. “Just getting all that exposure will be key.”
