Mumm has been one of my favorite players now since last spring. He’s not going to be a superstar at Ames, but he’s a solid player who, if needed, can get you buckets from penetrating or from deep. His best asset is his tremendous speed, he’ll burn you. And his ability to knock down a triple and always make the right play within the offense makes him dangerous.
2017 Joe Lathrum, 6’4 F, All Iowa Attack Black 17U (Dowling)
The workmanlike post was tremendous all weekend in Attack Black’s journey to the title. He’s methodical and disciplined in the post, and big enough to bang with taller players. He played sparingly last winter at Dowling, but will be an impact player next season with the Maroons.
2017 DJ Brown, 6’2 SG, All Iowa Attack Black 17U (Dowling)
Brown could be seen knocking down triples all weekend, and it’s clear that the rangy wing’s role is to be a sharpshooter. He’s tall enough to see over defenders, and does a good job surveying the defense and making the right pass. He may not start at Dowling, but like Lathrum, he’ll be an impact player.
2017 Max Stoltz, 6′ G, All Iowa Attack Black 17U (Dowling)
He’s really stepped up his game over the past year, and he was integral to Attack Black’s championship run over the weekend. Mostly he’s a 3-point shooter, he hoisted plenty of them on Sunday. And he’s a deceivingly athletic guard who can handle it well and play either guard spot.
2018 Zaine Leedom, 6’4 SF, Iowa Intensity 16U (Grinnell)
Without a doubt the biggest eye-opener of the weekend, the rangy and tall wing is skilled and has a high basketball IQ. He finished off Iowa Dynasty in the 16U final with an emphatic two-hand slam, and can burn you from deep or get by you effectively on the closeout. He will rocket up our 2018 rankings.
2018 Garrett Sturtz, 6’2 SG, Iowa Intensity 16U (Newton)
An intriguing shooting guard with great length and one of the purest stokes from deep in the state. If he gets an open look he will bury it. Sturtz is also capable of putting the ball on the floor and running point guard if necessary. He’s best when used as a scoring guard, and he and Connor Gholson will be Iowa’s own version of “splash-brothers” next winter.
