After sitting out the first half of last season because of a transfer, he played off the bench for the Wildcats after December. Next season he could be a star as a senior, using great size, length and athleticism to have his way with opponents on both ends of the floor.
2017 Jacob Rau, 6’7 C, Pure Prep (Waukee)
The Waukee product will not dazzle you with athleticism, but he is a smart player who uses a pump-fake effectively and times his jumps perfectly. His savvy aids him with rebounding, put-backs, and shot-blocking.
2017 Sam Allen, 6’3 SG, Martin Brothers (Grinnell)
Known as a sharpshooter in the past, Allen is just that, and has one of the purest and most fluid shots in the state. But he’s done a nice job of developing his ball-handling and his ability to create for teammates.
2018 John Waggoner, 6’6 C, Iowa Elite (Dowling)
If you thought there may be a void in Dowling’s paint next season with the departure of 6’10 big-man Ted Brown, think again. Waggoner is ready to come in and be a star next season. He’s a broad-shouldered and devastatingly strong post, with a nice power-dribble game who gives max effort each time don the floor.
2018 Hunter Strait, 6′ PG, Iowa Elite (Cedar Rapids Washington)
I was blown away by the talent level of the Washington point guard, and he should be lumped in with AJ Green, Luke Vaske, and Sam Ingoli as candidates for best point guard in the 2018 class. He’s smooth with a very tight handle, a pest on defense, plus has superb vision and passing ability.
2018 Sam Ingoli, 6’4, Iowa Elite (Dowling)
Ingoli showed a toughness tonight that I’d previously not seen before from him. He was aggressive taking the ball into the lane, welcoming contact and holding the ball until contact game before dishing out to open teammates. Also impressive was his outside shooting, he connected on four 3s in this one.
2017 Tirique Randolph, 6’1 PG, Mavericks Purple (Davenport Central)
He was a wizard with ball in his hands, particularly with his passes — showcasing elite vision and skill and certainly establishing himself as one of the state’s best passers.
2018 Keith Johnson, 6’5 SF, Tri State Steam (Dubuque Hempstead)
The lean and rangy wing will debut very high in the forthcoming updated 2018 rankings, and could ultimately develop into a top-20 player in that class. He takes pride in defense and can guard on the perimeter or in the post – a shot-blocker who can score from the perimeter and attacks the rim adeptly.
2017 Louis Psihoyos, 6’1 PG, Tri State Steam (Dubuque Senior)
It’s clear that the Greek hoopster is heavily influenced by his European roots. He was at times reminiscent of a mini Manu Ginobili – a crafty and skilled guard using savvy to get open looks and create for teammates.
2017 Tyler Voves, 6′ G, Mavericks Purple (Linn-Mar)
We’ve been impressed with Voves since our Combine last fall, and it was again clear today that he could be a star with Linn-Mar next season. He’s a supremely fast guard with as pure of a stroke as anyone in the state.
