Continue ReadingWaterville-Elysian-Morristown forward Zac Olson has always been a highly productive player. Think back to when he was with the Minnesota Fury at 15U and was the MVP of the Northstar Hoops Report State tournament.
This past winter he led the WEM Bucs to a 25 win season with 23.4 points per game. The ability is there but the thought that the strongly built 6-foot-5 forward was more of a four man than a three which would mean he is undersized for his position.
Not so fast everybody! Olson has showed up with a Comets DLR team and has spent a lot of time as a highly productive wing. He can still post players up but he has huge frontcourt teammates that man the paint, Zac is shooting a high percentage facing the basket from mid-range and at the arc.
Also, Olson has been the leader of a Comets DLR team that has been highly successful this spring.
“I’ve been having a great start to the year,” Olson said about playing with Comets DLR. “I’m playing the 2 or 3 depending on the game. Posting up when I have height or size advantages, staying outside attacking the rim, shooting the ball at a high percentage from beyond the three point line, and I’m feeling really confident in my shot.”
As we said Olson has moved from a frontcourt style player to a face the basket three man. To become that Olson has put in a lot of work
“From winter ball to now I’ve really improved on my ball handling,” said Olson. “With getting to the rim and even taking it up the court on fast breaks. Ever since last year when AAU ended I really worked on my shot in the fall and this past year I shot 40 percent from the three point line during school ball.
“And that’s really correlated over to AAU and has really added to my game cause I’m still shooting at a high percentage now. I’m really trying to continue working on my defense and keep working on improving my ball handling. And working on getting better on pulling up into my shot off of ball screens.”
Several college programs are interested in Olson because of his ability as a wing. Zac is a legit NSIC prospect.
“I’m hearing from U of Mary, Winona State, Bemidji State, and U of Sioux Falls, and Briar Cliff mainly. I’m going to get my pre law major then law school after. I’m not too picky on the location as long as it offers my major and is the right feel to it. Also, my coach had talked to UMD this month as well.”
We caught up with Olson when he was returning from a visit to Winona State and this is what he said about his time on campus there.
“The Winona State visit was great,” Zac said. “I love the coaches and facilities. The campus is great and I really like what they have going on there, there one of my top options right now.”
Olson is not done working yet. There are many things he wants to do to take his game to a new level.
“(I need to) keep improving on the little things, become the complete all around player, continue getting in the weight room. And keep working on my shot and ball handling. And make a run these last 5 tournaments.”
