The main reason was that there was no 2016 season for the 6’4″ sharpshooter. Moore missed his senior season after suffering a torn ACL injury in his knee while playing football for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers managed to win 16 games and advance to the Class 3, District 7 championship game without Moore, but his absence was just too much to overcome as they were eliminated by North Tech 38-36 in the finals. The absence of Moore’s 20 points a game was the game-changer.
“Missing my senior year of sports was something I never imagined would happen to me,” Moore said. “You hear about athletes tearing their ACL ending their seasons, but never thought this could or would happen to me. I felt as if I had let everyone down, but with all the support and over time I realized that things happen for a reason and a positive will always come from a negative.”
As it turned it, this cloud in Moore’s life had a beautiful silver lining. Despite being out of action for an entire season, several schools continue to recruit Moore as he went through his rigorous rehab period. He received attention from several Division II schools in the GLVC and MIAA. In the end, Moore would up committing and signing at Drury University in Springfield.
Not only did Moore sign with one of the top Division II programs in the country (Drury won the NCAA Division II national title in 2013), Moore will be reunited with is brother Drew Moore, who will be a junior at Drury. Drew Moore was a starting forward with the Panthers in 2016. Drew and Alex were teammates on some very good Duchesne teams for two seasons.
“I felt as if I knew the program really well and it could be a great fit,” Moore said. “I believe I could come in and contribute right away. I’m also very excited to get to play with my older brother Drew again.”
In Alex Moore, Drury is getting an excellent perimeter shooter enjoyed a big breakout season as a junior in 2015, when he averaged 20 points a game. As a sophomore in 2014, Moore was primarily a spot up shooter as teams collapsed inside on his brother Drew. As a junior, Alex became a more potent scorer as he added a mid-range jumper off the dribble. As he prepares for the next level, Moore is looking for improve his ball handling as well as his athleticism.
“Before going to college, I want to work on improving my ability to handle the ball and continue to become physically stronger,” Moore said. “Succeeding at the next level requires more size and speed to be able to guard and rebound the way I did at the high school level.”
