He’s been highly touted by us since we saw him at our Prime Time Prospects Combine two years ago, and he’s starting to really come into his own this spring after a successful year of varsity under his belt. Elite size and vision plus defensive tenacity could land him some high-major Division I offers by summer’s end.
AJ Green, 6′ PG, Iowa Barnstormers (Cedar Falls)
Perhaps the biggest stock-riser in the state, Green picked up his first offer from mid-major elite Northern Iowa after the state tournament, and has been his usual dazzling self this spring. He’s picked up additional offers from North Dakota and South Dakota State in the last two weeks and many more will come.
Sebit Kallio, 6’3 G/F, Iowa Wolves (Roosevelt)
Certainly an intriguing prospect with great length and innate ability, Kallio is still a bit raw, but has loads of potential. He did not play last season while attending Des Moines Lincoln, but has transferred into Roosevelt, where if he can get on the floor will be an impact player.
Jackson Joens, 6’5 G/F, Martin Brothers (Xavier)
Joens showed glimpses of brilliance during a state tournament title run with the Saints, and looked like a quintessential D1 wing. He’s made the switch to Martin Brothers from Iowa Barnstormers and should be on the radar of low to mid-major D1 coaches.
Van Rees, 6’6 SF, Martin Brothers (Sioux City East)
Still offer-less, Rees is coming off perhaps the best sophomore season of anyone in the state. He’s spending his 16U season with a tremendous Martin Brothers squad, and his mix of inside-outside prowess could land him some offers by summer’s end.
Matthew Mims, 5’11 PG, Martin Brothers (Xavier)
Like his Xavier teammate Joens, Mims’ state tournament performance was eye-opening. So much so that he picked up a Division I offer from North Dakota. He, again like Joens, switched over the Martin Brothers for his 16U season, and could pick up some additional offers sooner rather than later.
Zaine Leedom, 6’5 F, Iowa Intensity, (Grinnell)
I’ve been hearing the rangy and versatile forward’s name a lot this spring from a variety of sources, and coming off the heels of a fantastic sophomore season with the Tigers, he’s blossoming into a star fast.
Rhett Darland, 6’3 SG, Iowa Cornsharks (Clarion-Goldfield)
A good-sized guard with a pure stroke who has quickly developed into one of the state’s best shooters. College coaches are already taking notice, and he’s been invited to several Division II elite camps, including power Augustana.
John Waggoner, 6’6 PF, Iowa Barnstormers/Iowa Elite (Dowling)
The potential replacement for dominant Maroon big-man Ted Brown, Waggoner will almost surely be an impact player with next season on a Dowling team that could be very good. In the meantime he’s catching some buzz with his great motor and inside skill while splitting time with Iowa Elite and the Iowa Barnstormers.
Luke Appel, 6’5 SG, Iowa Wolves (Marshalltown)
An exponentially improved wing, Appel has increasingly improved his already stealth outside shot and continues to develop an ability to get to the hoop. He rebounds well from the guard spot, and is big and long enough to bang in the post. Appel could emerge as a star next year in Marshalltown.
