With the development of players seeming to get better every year, many of these sophomores were one of the top players on competitive teams throughout the state. It was a tough list to come up with, but we narrowed down our picks for the Vantage Hoops All-Sophomore Team. As always, these types of lists are up for debate, but here’s our picks for the 2016 Vantage Hoops All-Sophomore Teams.
Sophomore of the Year
Donovann Toatley was tremendous down the stretch for SSSAS.Donovann Toatley, 5’7″ PG, St. Stephen’s St. Agnes: He was the most important player for a team that made a surprise visit to the VISAA Division 1 Final Four. The 5’8” PG was one of the most exciting players in the state, and led his team with 15 points, 4 assists, 4 rebounds and 2 steals. He earned Second Team All VISAA Division 1 honors.
First Team
Brandon Slater, 6’6″ Wing, PVI: One of the most improved players in the state, Slater became an integral part of possibly the most talented team in the state. The 6’6” lanky wing showed off his improved jumper, and was one of the top options for PVI while also being one of their best defensive stoppers.
Brayden Gault, 6’4″ SG, Battlefield: Gault showed flashes as a freshman, and as the season went on he took to the role of the go-to guy despite his age. The 6’4” wing averaged 14 points and 6 rebounds, including a 20 point, 5 rebound, 4 assist outing in their close 6A Quarterfinal lost to Oscar Smith.
Rasir Bolton, 6’1″ PG, Carlisle: The Richmond native transferred to Carlisle in Martinsville at the beginning of the year and took off running. The 6’1” point guard was the team’s leader and go-to guy, averaging 22 points, 6 assists and 4 rebounds, enough to earn him Second Team All State in the VISAA Division 2 classification.
Keldon Johnson, 6’5″ SG, Park View (SH): Despite an ankle injury that kept him out for the first half of the season, Johnson wasted no time in his return, averaging just under 20 points per game. The nationally ranked wing took a little bit of time to get going, but he still was effective enough to earn VHSL 3A First Team All State.
David McCormack, 6’10” C, Norfolk Academy: He was somewhat under the radar at Norfolk Academy, but the 6’10” paint clogger was steady and productive. The nationally ranked big dominated opponents in a variety of ways, averaging 16 points, 12 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 blocks per game.
Jonathan Norfleet, 6’1″ PG, Salem (VB): On a young Salem team riddled with guards, Norfleet shined as one of the 757’s best up and coming guards. The 6’1” point averaged a steady 14 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists per game while leading Salem to the 5A South Regional Tournament.
Zach Pfaffenberger, 6’8″ PF, Episcopal: He transferred from Trinity Episcopal last season and I would say things seemed to work out. The 6’8” Pfaffenberger provided muscle, rim protection and size for an Episcopal team, and doing the dirty work led him to a VISAA Division One state championship.
