Continue ReadingThe Top 28 has been marked with some incredible moments, games, and surrounding weather. In the midst of a storm that’s been covering Central and North Louisiana and making it’s way down south, some of the states best have descended upon Lake Charles to provide entertainment at the highest point.
Game one of the event went into overtime and there hasn’t been much of a let up since then. In Class C both the 1 and 2 seed went down in the semifinals to start the event on Tuesday. New Living Word took Elizabeth to overtime and finished the game there while Summerfield only needed regulation to take care of Atlanta.
Later that night 5A was up and East Ascension hung with the 1 seed Natchitoches Central but couldn’t stop NCHS from reaching it’s third state title game against Scotlandville who used a massive run in the 1st and 2nd quarter to take care of Ouachita. Javonte Smart (6’4 PG, 2018) was able to score 25 points in a measly 19 minutes to take care of business. These two have split 1-1 the past two years in the state championship.
Last night however, really stole the show when Class B Grace Christian started it off by taking Anacoco to the wire before 2015 Top 28 MOP Will Reese (6’4 SF, 2016) iced the game with free throws down the stretch. On the other side of the bracket the 1 seed Simsboro ran into what is the Top 28 buzzsaw in Zwolle as they return to the championship game after an impressive 61-38 win in search of their 15th state title.
Will Reese looking for another title! In the lone 2A game played last night, Riverside was able to win over district rivals Country Day despite a monster performance from Romin Williams (5’10 PG, 2017) who had 36 points on 10/16 FG, 3/8 3P, 13/13 FT with 5 rebounds and 4 steals. They will face the winner of today’s North Caddo vs Madison Prep game with their eyes on 4 straight titles.
Class 3A was the real kicker last night. St. Louis battled UHigh all night but fell once again in the semifinals 71-56 in large part to the top unsigned senior in Louisiana Jalen Johnson (6’7 F, 2016) and his 27 points and 9 rebounds. The other game though was the 1 seed Peabody who was undefeated in the state coming in against the 4 seed Wossman who has had a huge turnaround from last season.
Peabody jumped out to a 31-18 halftime lead and it appeared they were headed for the dream match-up against UHigh. However, a 21-14 3rd quarter gave Wossman hope and with the game tied late, check out below what happened.
