Normally an MVP spot would be reserved for the guy who leads his team to a championship, but we had to make an exception here. Carius scored 34 points in a semifinal loss to Valley, then went for 34 again less than 24 hours later in a consolation shellacking of Cedar Falls. In three games last week the Northern Michigan signee averaged 29.3 points (57 FG%), 8.7 rebounds and 1.7 steals
AJ Green, Cedar Falls
The sophomore phenom came out of the gates red-hot, scoring 10 first quarter points for the Tigers in their quarterfinal win over Council Bluffs Lincoln. But what really was amazing, was his 14 points in four minutes in a semifinal against Iowa City West, he nearly willed his team to a miracle come-back win. He’ll be a Division I point guard.
Turner Scott, Valley
If there was one guy that was sure to be on this list before the tournament started it was Scott. He’s the steady and consistent point guard of the state champion Tigers. Scott had his defining moment in the semifinals, when he broke to the hoop and hit a game-winner at the buzzer in double overtime against Pleasant Valley.
Quinton Curry, Valley
This junior bruiser was playing with excess passion all week, and he was everywhere for the state champion Tigers — scoring from inside and out, shooting at an efficient clip, and rebounding well. His averages during the three games; 14.0 points on an amazing 17-20 shooting, and 6.3 rebounds.
Devontae Lane, Iowa City West
Lane has maybe been the most impressive player in the state over the last year. It started last summer when he was the best player on a supremely talented Iowa Barnstormers 16U team. It continued at the state tournament, where he was the best player on an also-supremely talented Iowa City West squad. He’ll receive a slew of D1 offers this summer.
