STATE: 20 Players to Know Part II — 3A/4A
Lim Chuol, Chariton
At one point in January the 6-foot-3 point-forward posted three straight triple-doubles, a simply remarkable feat. The Chariton junior possesses great length and athleticism, and could have a breakout week at Wells Fargo Arena.
Levi Jansen, MOC-Floyd Valley
It’s a treat to watch this sharpshooter play ball. And the MOC-Floyd Valley guard will almost certainly provide the crowd with some “oohs” and “ahhhs” before he’s done playing next week. He’s signed to play with Division II powerhouse Augustana, which he chose over multiple Division I offers.
David Wedewer, Dubuque Wahlert
This point guard has improved exponentially over the past year-and-half, and we’ve said before that he’s a “coach’s dream.” Look for a well-trained and fundamentally sound point guard running Dubuque Wahlert — our favorite to win class 3A. Wedewer is committed to play at D2 Sioux Falls.
Shammond Ivory, Perry
Ivory is a top-10 2016 who will provide some razzle-dazzle to the tournament. A supremely quick and athletic guard, he can get to the basket at will, where he finishes well. He’s been getting plenty of JuCo looks this season, and you’ll see he’s a potential D1 talent.
Will Carius, Pleasant Valley
The Northern Michigan commit stands out mostly because of his size – a 6-foot-6 wing. He’s an elite scorer (21.7 ppg), and shoots the ball well for a forward — 51.3 percent from the floor and 42 percent from 3. Carius is the best player on 4A’s top-seeded team, Pleasant Valley.
Sam Ingoli, Dowling Catholic
Iowa’s second-ranked 2018, he’s the highest-ranked sophomore playing at the state tournament. Ingoli is a well-built 6-foot-4 combo guard for Dowling, and passing is his specialty. He’s been playing particularly well of late, and scoring is becoming easier for the young D1 prospect. Look for Ingoli to possibly have a coming-out party this week.
AJ Green, Cedar Falls
There’s more buzz surrounding Green coming into the tourney than any other player, and rightfully so. The 6-foot-1 Cedar Falls point guard has had some big games of late, and scored 31 points — including a game-winner — in the Tigers’ substate final against Linn-Mar. Watch out for this smooth operator.
Tony Bonner, Council Bluffs Lincoln
A meaty 6-foot-7 center, Bonner is big, tall, and deceivingly athletic. He has very soft touch around the rim and great length which makes him an elite shot-blocker. He averaged 18.4 points on 63 percent shooting, 7.6 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks this season for Council Bluffs Lincoln.
Douglas Wilson, Hoover
When he jumps towards the hoop he soars, and though he’s a bit undersized as a 6-foot-6 center, his supreme athleticism more than makes up for it. He’s great around the rim, and should provide some highlight reel dunks in the Huskies’ bout with No. 6 seed Iowa City West.
Turner Scott, Valley
Two years ago the Valley point guard spurred a surprise run to state, and ultimately a surprise spot in the state championship game for a Valley team that was just 13-8 during the regular season. This season is a different story, Scott and the Tigers are 20-3, and among the favorites to win a title. Scott is a wily vet who scored 38 in a substate final against Ankeny Centennial. He’s headed to Truman State next season to play D2 ball.
