It was a tough start for Bloomington South and at the half they were down 31-20. Tucker Blackwell only had 5 points and New Albany had a controlling lead. Then, as the second half got underway, Tucker started to get going again. He hit a three early in the third quarter that sparked a run and by the time the quarter was over he had 15 points and it was only a three-point New Albany lead.
New Albany started to struggle a bit in the fourth. A Josh Jefferson foul followed by a tech gave him his fifth and he was done for the day while at the same time allowing Bloomington South right back in this one after the free throws. Bloomington South took their first lead of the game with 3:33 to go but New Albany fought back. Down the stretch Romeo Langford was huge at the free throw line. He hit his last one of regulation to put New Albany up three but it was only short lived as Tucker Blackwell drilled a triple to send it into overtime.
In the final period, South struggled to get baskets to fall and they continually put Langford at the line where he was excellent. He helped to keep South at a distance and eventually held them off to win, 73-66.
Player of the Game:
Romeo Langford – 6’4 SG – 2018
You watch Langford play and you see all the flashy things he does but where he really gets you is in a game like this, where he’s needed to take control of the game and keep his team in a position to succeed. He was key down the stretch when New Albany was in a vulnerable spot and needed a play. Romeo dropped 35 in this one with so many coming at the free throw line. This was a game he was needed to do things other than dunk the ball or shoot a three and he did just that.
