There upsets, massive performances, teams who made statements and of course the half-court buzzer beater heard around the state. The stage has been set and it’s one that you don’t want to miss if you are a fan of basketball, high school sports, or just good ole fashion competition.
Class 1A
3 Southern Lab (26-7) vs 4 Arcadia (25-5) – Arcadia is riding a 25 game win streak since football players have returned and they are looking to cap it off in the state championship. Meanwhile, SU Lab weathered through some early season struggles and are playing their best basketball. Southern Lab and their length play primarily a zone and will look for the athleticism of Dexter Dennis (6’4 G/F, 2017) in both the halfcourt and transition. They are looking for their 16th state championship and first since 2005. Arcadia is led by a trio that all average over 15 points including Danquarian Fields (6’2 G/F, 2016) who had a big game against LCA in the semifinals.
Class 2A
1 Madison Prep (33-4) vs 2 Riverside Academy (28-5) – Riverside is looking for their fourth consecutive 2A state championship where seniors are accustomed to nothing less in their time in high school. Madison Prep was the 1A state champion last season and looking to win back to back in two different classes. Both teams have been playing fantastic basketball as of late. Riverside is led by it’s two seniors who are committed to VCU (Malik Crowfield) and South Alabama (Herb McGee) but it’s Jared Butler (6’1 PG, 2018) who puts them over the top. MPA has a load of talented sophomores as well but are led by Josh Anderson (6’4 SG, 2017).
Class 3A
2 University Lab (30-4) vs 4 Wossman (25-8) – UHigh is looking for it’s 3rd straight 3A state title while Wossman is coming off a losing season last year and are on an incredible run. Wossman last won a title in 2008 and are looking to get back to their winning ways. In the semifinals, Wossman’s Casey Jones Jr (5’11 PG, 2017) was the standout performer and that included a halfcourt shot at the buzzer to win it. UHigh is led by two seniors in LSU signee Wayde Sims (6’6 F, 2016) and Jalen Johnson (6’7 F, 2016) who had 27 points and 9 rebounds and remains the top uncommitted player in the state.
Class 4A
2 Washington-Marion (22-8) vs 4 Bossier (26-10) – Class 4A has been a roller-coaster all season where teams have moved around the rankings at an incredible pace. Jumping multiple spots then falling the next week has been the staple of the season. Both teams have had their ups and downs but are playing really well now. Bossier last won a title in 2011 while it’s been a much longer wait for the hometown team Marion (1987). Bossier is led by Larry Robinson (6’0 PG, 2016) and their size and physicality while Marion is led by athleticism and quickness that highlights the high jumper Christian Edwards (6’5 F, 2017).
Can Malik Crowfield (left) and Herb McGee (right) win their 4th straight title?
