The new power rankings system in LHSAA clearly opened the door for teams to test themselves and not be punished and it may be why we see so many chalk looking brackets in the Top 28. It’s March Madness time or as we’ve begun calling it down here, Marsh Madness. Feedback is always welcome whether it’s through Twitter, email, or in the comment section below (Insert fancy arrow that points down). Keep in mind that the underlined teams are our predictions who who wins these semifinal match-ups.
Class C
2 Atlanta vs 3 Summerfield (Tuesday, March 8th, 2:30 PM) – Atlanta has had an incredible season with an incredible 34 wins to 4 losses on the season. Meanwhile, Summerfield earned their 3 seed by playing only 25 games in which they won 18. Lashard Powell (6’0 G, 2016) for Atlanta has been incredible this season and will look to lead them to another opportunity at a championship.
1 Elizabeth vs 5 New Living Word (Tuesday, March 8th, 4:15 PM) – Elizabeth won the battle late for the 1 seed over Atlanta but must face an extremely tough NLW squad that is playing it’s best ball and looking for a three peat in Class C. NLW is led by Rashaan Proctor (6’0 G, 2016) but is only 22-18 on the season after playing a lot of higher classed teams. Elizabeth puts their 26-5 record on the line as they look to hold off a surging NLW.
Class B
3 Anacoco vs 7 Grace Christian (Wednesday, March 9th, 1:00 PM) – Grace Christian brings a team lead by a group of sophomores to the Top 28 and look to put their 31-6 record and youthful exuberance to the test against last season’s Top 28 MOP Will Reese (6’4 SF, 2016) and the defending champions Anacoco. He leads Anacoco with almost 27 points a game s they had a 27-11 record. They are looking for a repeat.
1 Simsboro vs 4 Zwolle (Wednesday, March 9th, 2:45 PM) – Zwolle and their 14 state titles have been a staple in the Top 28 and are looking to return to the title game for the first time since they beat Simsboro in 2012 in the championship. Despite a slow start, they finished 29-11 on the season. Simsboro had no problem with their start and continued to roll throughout the season as they finished 28-7 behind Zachary Taylor (6’4 G/F, 2016).
Class 1A
3 Southern Lab vs 10 Tensas (Thursday, March 10th, 4:30 PM) – Tensas’ run continues as they are the lone double digit seed in the Top 28 outside of 5A. They’ve played some big time games throughout the season and have a 21-9 record as they’ve continued to improve season after season. However, SU Lab is also playing it’s best ball after some early season struggles. They finished 24-5 with numerous highlights thanks to Dexter Dennis (6’4 G/F, 2017).
1 Lafayette Christian vs 4 Arcadia (Thursday, March 10th, 8:00 PM) – LCA may be the biggest favorite to win their class as anyone in any classification but don’t tell that to Arcadia who rattled off 21 straight wins after an 0-5 start. If they want to continue their winning streak, they have to figure out what to do with LCA’s Galen Alexander (6’6 F, 2017). LCA at 31-3 has been fantastic this season and beat some big time competition. Will we see more of this…
