Class C
1 Elizabeth beat 9 Gibsland-Coleman 52-47; 5 New Living Word beat 4 Starks 82-56; 3 Summerfield beat 6 Jehovah-Jireh 69-62; 2 Atlanta beat 7 Simpson 55-39
Next Round: 1 Elizabeth vs 5 NLW; 2 Atlanta vs 3 Summerfield
New Living Word continued their hot play and have an average game of 101 to 49 in their 3 playoff games.They play Kolby Friday (6’3 G, 2016) and Elizabeth next for the right to play for the championship game; he averages 20 points and 13 rebounds Meanwhile, the incredible run of JJCH and their young squad ended Saturday against Summerfield. They’ll play against an Atlanta squad led by the 22 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists a game of Rashard Powell (6’0 G, 2017).
Class B
1 Simsboro beat 8 Stanley 76-65; 4 Zwolle beat 5 Midland 78-76; 3 Anacoco beat 6 Weston 62-57; 7 Grace Christian beat 2 Fairview 75-62
Next Round: 1 Simsboro vs 4 Zwolle; 3 Anacoco vs 7 Grace Christian
Grace Christian pulled off a big win over Fairview and now gets the chance to knock off Will Reese (6’4 SF, 2016) and the defending champions Anacoco; Reese was last years Top 28 overall MVP. Zwolle is back in the Top 28 where they are more than comfortable being as their history shows but they have a tough match-up against Simsboro and Zachary Taylor (6’3 G/F, 2016) and his 21 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 3 assists a game.
Class 1A
1 Lafayette Christian beat 8 Hamilton Christian 75-54; 4 Arcadia beat 5 Varnado 65-62; 3 Southern Lab beat 6 Grambling Lab 76-56; 10 Tensas beat 2 Northwood 62-57
Next Round: 1 LCA vs 4 Arcadia; 3 SU Lab vs 10 Tensas
Tensas continued their storied run behind the play of Lamonte Bass (5’10 G, 2018) and his 18.6 points per contest. They play Southern Lab in the next round which is a team with more size and athleticism than they’ve seen in these playoffs. Meanwhile the 21 game win streak for Arcadia is on the line with a title berth against the front runners in Lafayette Christian. They’ll have to figure out a way to defend the 15.9 points and 6.1 rebounds that Galen Alexander (6’6 F, 2017) has added since his return.
Class 2A
1 Madison Prep beat 8 Many 80-26; 4 North Caddo beat 5 Episcopal 69-47; 3 Country Day beat 6 Rayville 69-63; 2 Riverside beat 7 Dunham 81-48
Next Round: 1 MPA vs 4 North Caddo; 2 Riverside vs 3 Country Day
Madison Prep continues to play their best ball heading into the Top 28 and have outscored opponents by an average of 50 points per game in the first 3 rounds. They have some size and will need it against North Caddo and Robert Williams (6’9 F, 2016, Texas A&M) and his 25 points, 14 rebounds, and 5 assists per game. A rematch of district rivals in Country Day and Riverside is on the other side of the bracket. CD will need a big game from Romin Williams (5’10 G, 2017) who averages 20 ppg.
Class 3A
1 Peabody beat 9 Port Allen 70-59; 4 Wossman beat 5 Patterson 65-58; 3 St. Louis Catholic beat 6 Carroll 58-56; 2 University Lab beat 7 De La Salle 67-45
Next Round: 1 Peabody vs 4 Wossman; 2 UHigh vs 3 St. Louis
Wossman continued it’s incredible run this season behind CJ Jones (5’10 G, 2017) and his 23.1 points and 7.2 assists a game. They face a Peabody team who is undefeated in state and has multiple players who can lead them. St. Louis gets another crack at University Lab this season and their seniors will be sure to make the most of it. They’ll have to find a way to slow down the size inside that includes the versatile Jalen Johnson (6’7 F, 2016) and his 21.8 points and 8.6 rebounds.
Class 4A
1 St. Thomas More beat 9 Plaquemine 53-52; 4 Bossier beat 5 Ellender 63-61; 3 Edna Karr beat 11 Fair Park 58-49; 2 Washington-Marion beat 10 McDonogh35 59-50
Next Round: 1 STM vs 4 Bossier; 2 WM vs 3 Karr
The top seeds all advanced yet again as was a common in quite a few classes. STM and Devante Benjamin (6’2 G, 2016) will face Bossier in the semifinals and it’s sure to be one of two very physical games in 4A. The other semifinal will include the senior laden Edna Karr squad against the very athletic Washington-Marion squad who is playing close to home. WM is led by high jumper Christian Edwards (6’5 F, 2017) and his 15.9 points, 14.7 rebounds, and 3.9 assists.
Class 5A
1 Natchitoches Central beat 8 H.L. Bourgeois 85-58; 13 East Ascension beat 21 Central Lafourche 71-64; 11 Ouachita Parish beat 19 Bonnabel 55-53; 2 Scotlandville beat 10 St. Augustine 71-58
Next Round: 1 NCHS vs 13 East Ascension; 2 Scotlandville vs 11 Ouachita
All season long we’ve expressed the depth of 5A and how a variety of teams could make the Top 28 and that happened with the two biggest numbered seeds in the entire Top 28 being from 5A. EA will have their hands full with a NCHS team lead by the defensive ability of Brandon Rachal (6’5 G, 2017) and his 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists. The other side see’s a Scotlandville team looking for a repeat and must go through Ouachita first. SLV’s Garrick Green (6’6 F, 2016) had 22 points and 21 rebounds in the quarterfinals.
