With the exception of the 9 seed Port Allen in Class 3A, these two classes have the Top 8 seeds left to do battle in Round 3. Here we will show each match-up, a player to watch, and who we expect to win (underlined)!
Class 2A
1 Madison Prep vs 8 Many – Many has continue to win close games and make people take notice but they run into a MPA squad who has really dialed up the defense as of late making them a tough two way team to deal with.
Player to Watch: Josh Anderson (6’5 SG, MPA, 2017)
4 North Caddo vs 5 Episcopal – Episcopal has consistently played deep into the playoffs throughout the years and North Caddo is looking for a return to the Top 28 as well. Both teams lost in the semifinals last season.
Player to Watch: Christavious Thomas (6’5 F, North Caddo, 2018)
3 Country Day vs 6 Rayville – This is one of the toughest games to pick because Country Day has the experience it takes to win a game like this. However, Rayville’s athleticism could be enough to over take it. Both teams lost in the Top 28 last year in Class 1A and 3A respectively.
Player to Watch: Romin Williams (5’10 PG, Country Day, 2017)
2 Riverside vs 7 Dunham – One day Dunham will be a much higher seed in 2A but right now their youth isn’t ready for the three time defending 2A champions. That being said, this experience on the road will go a long way for a young Dunham squad.
Player to Watch: Jared Butler (6’1 PG, Riverside, 2018)
Class 3A
1 Peabody vs 9 Port Allen – Port Allen has made another run to the quarterfinals as the 9 seed, just like last season. This time they get Peabody who is the 1 seed instead of district mate UHigh who is the 2 seed. Plenty of experience, albeit some young, for both teams.
Player to Watch: Nigel Allen (6’1 PG, Port Allen, 2016)
4 Wossman vs 5 Patterson – Patterson is one of those tough teams who grinds you all game. Wossman will play man and is ready for the challenge despite most of the roster not being used to winning. Their turn around in year one of a new coach could be Top 28 bound.
Player to Watch: Taylan Grogan (6’0 PG, Patterson, 2016)
3 St. Louis Catholic vs 6 Carroll – St. Louis led by the two guards with loads of experience while Carroll will look to play inside-out. It’ll be a battle of wills but SLC’s desire to make it back to the Top 28 yet again will likely win out.
Player to Watch: Larry Owens (6’8 F/C, Carroll, 2017)
2 University Lab vs 7 De La Salle – DLS has numerous juniors and the size to compete but the senior leadership of UHigh looking for a 3rd straight state title will be too much. That being said, how DLS plays could be an indicator of next season’s success.
Player to Watch Jalen Johnson (6’7 F, UHigh, 2016)
