Continue ReadingDubuque Wahlert showed why they’re a two-time defending champion in Class 3A on Monday night, making big plays down the stretch to close out a 50-45 substate final win over Waverly-Shell Rock.
The Golden Eagles ended the game on an 11-1 run, making free throws and coming away with big defensive plays to send themselves back to the state tournament, where they’ll have a chance to win their third straight title.
A tight game throughout, Waverly-Shell Rock was able to take a five-point lead, 44-39, with just under 3:00 to play. From there, Wahlert was able to force turnovers and get to the free throw line on the other end, slowly chipping away before grabbing a 45-44 lead at the 1:05 mark, a lead they wouldn’t relinquish the rest of the way.
Wahlert (19-5) was led by Iowa commit Cordell Pemsl, who finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Riley Till added 12 for the Golden Eagles. They’re the No. 5 seed next week in Des Moines, and open their title defense against MOC-Floyd Valley at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
Waverly-Shell Rock ends the season at 18-6. They were led by junior big man, and Northern Iowa commit, Austin Phyfe, who had 22 points and 11 rebounds. Andrew Epley added 10 for the Go-Hawks.

Dubuque Wahlert player evaluations
PG David Wedewer (6’0″, 2016) — The always steady point guard didn’t have a big scoring night for Wahlert, but he was steady with the ball, ran the offense well and made a few clutch free throws down the stretch. He values possessions, making the right decision with the ball far more often than not, is a good ball handler and a capable perimeter shooter.
GF Riley Till (6’7″, 2016) — Till was sensational early in the game, routinely getting himself to the rim and finishing. The lengthy wing is a solid ball-handler, is great at the rim and runs the floor extremely well. He’s a long, athletic defender who can defend a number of positions and is just scratching the surface on his potential. Rebounds at a high level from his wing spot and is capable of pushing in transition.
PF Cordell Pemsl (6’8″, 2016) — The Iowa commit didn’t really play that well and still finished with a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds. His basketball IQ is off the charts, and he made a big huge defensive plays down the stretch that come from pure instincts and feel for the game. Capable of scoring at all three levels, but at his best on the block, where he’s got great footwork and the ability to score going over either shoulder. Very good rebounder.
SG Austin Kluck (6’0″, 2016) — Kluck has a nose for the ball, pulling down four offensive rebounds despite being one of the smaller players on the floor. Moves well off the ball on the offensive end and showed a good stroke at the free throw line.
SG Josh Schmitt (5’11”, 2016) — Comes off the bench for Wahlert and is able to provide a bit of a shooting spark from the arc. Moves well off the ball, is ready to shoot on the catch and has a fairly quick release. Gets good rotation on his jumper.
Waverly-Shell Rock player evaluations
PG Camry Moore (5’11”, 2016) — The steady point guard had a quiet night, but showed some of his ability in the fourth quarter, getting to the rim and finishing a tough shot as well as setting up an easy bucket for Phyfe with his penetration. He’s quick and a solid ball handler, but I wish he had been more aggressive in the game.
G Christian Mosley (5’11”, 2016) — The other half of W-SR’s starting backcourt, Mosley was largely quiet as well. He did show a good mid-range game in the second quarter with a nice pull-up jumper from the elbow off the bounce. He’s a solidly built guard who can get to the rim and is a solid defender.
C Austin Phyfe (6’9″, 2017) — Phyfe was sensational throughout this contest, looking like the best player on the floor most of the evening. A highly skilled lefty, he’s been getting into much better shape and moves much better than he did a year ago. His footwork in the paint is fantastic, he’s worked to extend his range to the arc and he’s a great rebounder with soft hands. He’s able to make plays for others either out of the low-post or the high-post as a very good and willing passer. Defensively he’s got good shot blocking instincts and rarely leaves his feet, instead going straight up and not getting fouls called on him. He’s got an array of post moves and the ability to score with either hand in the paint. One of the top players in the state, regardless of class.
G Andrew Epley (6’0″, 2016) — Solid all-around player who doesn’t stand out in any way but does everything well. He finishes around the rim, is active on both ends of the floor and plays solid defense.
