The 2016 Coach Perspective Showcase was set at South Suburban College put together by former College Coach Adam DeMong. The event brought talent from the surrounding Chicago area and the state of Missouri. Here is a look at a few of the top players from the event.
C Donovan Ferguson (Downer Grove South)
Ferguson who was receiving interest from numerous Division 2 schools didn’t disappoint those who came to see him. He played above the rim majority of his time at the showcase. Donovan altered and blocked shots at a high rate, even catching a few dunks on opposing bigs. Still rather raw on offense he controls the game by using his athleticism and long length.
F Jalen Wilkins- McCoy (Crete-Monee)
Jalen turned out to be the surprise player of the event. A virtual unknown to Prep Hoops and high school basketball in general he played his first year of organized basketball. He’s a natural athlete on the court. He tries to dunk everything in transition or when slashing to the rim. Wilkins-McCoy is very raw. This is his first time playing basketball, but he’s what you would call a natural. He has a skillset that can improve as time goes. The potential to become impact player in college is there. Jalen is a kid to lookout for if you are a JUCO program that develops players.
F Christian Peevy (Mount Carmel)
Peevy played with a high IQ on Saturday. At his size he is able to make moves on the perimeter against opponents who can’t move. He took advantage of his mismatches when smaller wings and guards switched on him. Peevy made some shots on the outside as well to show his overall improvement. He is a division 2 level prospect that needs to add some weight and muscle, but is a quality talent.
SG Dulan Scott (Farragut)
Scott is what you would call a power guard. He has size and strength at his position that other players in the state lack. The senior used his attributes to his advantage, putting guys on his hip as he got to the rim with force. Scott also surprised some coaches with his athleticism playing the passing lanes well and flushed a couple of dunks on fast breaks. Has talent and the grades to play on the division 1 level.
PG Creig Atkins (DePaul College Prep)
The DePaul Prep standout is a dynamic guard who is very shifty and poised. He played well Saturday setting up teammates and himself if he had a better opportunities. Atkins plays with toughness and a swagger to his game. Creig plays as if he knows he the better player in his match-up. His play made most of the opposing guards look crazy when they pressed up against him with pressure and if they went under ball screens, he made them pay by nailing shot after shot. I look for Atkins to be recruited by several local JUCO programs in Illinois.
SG Sidney Mason (Chicago Vocational)
Mason started out slow as most high school players do on a Saturday morning. As the camp kept progressing, he totally went into beast mode. He stopped shooting jump shots and got in the lane and used his big frame to get to the rim and punish anyone who was in front of him. Mason has pure toughness to his game that fits his look. He is a good passer and finishes most plays anywhere around the rim. Sidney can become a mid-major prospect after two years at the right junior college.
PG Sam Taylor III (Thornton)
Taylor was by far the best PG in the camp. With his quickness and agility he pushed the pace of games for his team. Sam is tough and reads defenses so well he made drives look effortless. He has quick hands and interrupts plays often. He will be an immediate impact on the next level.
