Massive block — Luke Martens thought he had a crafty backdoor cut midway through the first half; Amir Coffey made sure he didn’t, as he volleyball-spiked the ball into the scores table. “Oooh” went the crowd.
2nd half run — Up by one at the break, Hopkins came out and scored the first seven of the half to build up a solid lead. From there they quickly built that to 11 and gained momentum.
Ice cold — Gary Trent, Jr. and Tre Jones, the known studs for the Eagles, shot a combined 11-40 from the floor, including 0-10 from 3-point land. AV was 1-14 as a team from the perimeter.
Hold it out — Remember last year, when Hopkins held the ball for a ridiculously long time on this same floor? The Royals intelligently went into the same tactic with about seven minutes left, although with a tad more dribbling and shooting. But the approach was there, and it was intentional: grind down the clock. Let this one run out.
Professor X — Can we talk about Xavier Johnson a bit more? X totaled 24 points and 6 rebounds, playing about as well as I’ve ever seen from him. He was a true spark plug and brought scoring in multiple ways.
