A 6-foot-2 guard who can get to the basket and shoot from the outside, Cavanaugh has played in four straight district championship games in his high school career. On Saturday, he helped his team get over the hump.
“Special is probably the best word to sum that kid up,” Fair Grove head coach Tim Brown said. “He has a high motor, he plays the game the right way and he can step out and make perimeter jump shots, get to the rim and he guarded (Conway’s) best player (Andrew Huckaby) really well.
“He’s just sensational. When he plays well, we follow suit.”
Cavanaugh said he has heard from Avila, Crowley’s Ridge, Culver Stockton and several other NAIA schools. He has not yet made a college visit.
“I am still looking for the right school where I really fit in, so I want to make the right choice for me,” Cavanaugh said. “If we make a run to state, I would like to be able to make a decision right after basketball is over.”
Although it has improved over the course of his high school career, Cavanaugh said his outside shot remains a work in progress.
“It is a little rusty lately and I need to get that back into gear and I also need to work on my free throws,” Cavanaugh said. “Sometimes I just get it in my head that I can’t shoot them, but I know I am capable. I also need to work on dribbling with my left hand. That’s something that I’m not very good with, so I really need to work more on that.”
Cavanaugh spent last summer playing with the Missouri Mavericks, his first summer playing AAU basketball.
“That was an awesome experience,” he said. “It was a bunch of really good people and it was a lot of fun.”
