Jack Peck, who just completed his senior season at Heritage, was the leading scorer in the cutthroat 5A Continental League at 18.3 points per game.
“He has an uncanny ability to score,” veteran Heritage coach Jentry Byleveld said of Peck. “He gets shots off that I’ve never seen, and he’s quick off the jump. He can score inside, can score outside. He carried our team all year.”
Peck, a 6-foot-2 three-year starter at Heritage, is a true under-the-radar player who played his final high school game last week without any significant college interest. He hasn’t ruled out joining a club team this spring in an attempt to gain further exposure for his talents.
“I hadn’t really thought of it before, but I could,” he said.
Byleveld is convinced Peck can be an impact player at the Division III, NAIA or junior-college level. He’s reached out to several NAIA schools in the midwest to tout Peck’s credentials.
“Everyone in our league knew he was a big scorer, so they are scouting to stop him, putting their best players on him, and he still averaged 18 points per game,” Byleveld said.
Peck said he worked hard to improve his stock as an outside shooter after spending most of his first two years as almost solely a slasher. He shot 30 percent from 3-point range this season, but he began to heat up even further as the season went on.
He also improved his stock as a perimeter defender and, Byleveld said, became a more tenacious rebounder (Peck averaged six per game) and overall leader.
Peck, who would project as a college combo guard, is convinced he can be an impact scorer and overall team contributor at the next level. He proved it for three years in one of Colorado’s toughest leagues. Now he just needs a chance to show what he’s got.
“I think my scoring ability is what I really bring,” Peck said. “That’s what I was doing at Heritage and that’s what I’m good at, so I know I could bring that.”
