The Panthers rode their defense and a strong start to the second half to a 47-39 victory.
“Coach (Jim) Melton just complimented us on our defense in the first half,” junior Kobe Webster said. “We didn’t’ score a lot but we knew shots would eventually fall. Hadn’t played here in awhile so had to get used to that but yeah our defense is really what contributed.”
Webster was especially critical in the second half. He finished as the game’s leading scorer with 16 points and 14 of them came in the second half. He also contributed two assists as he shot 5-for-12 from the field and an impressive 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
Webster’s strong play coincided with that of Jaren Jackson Jr. The junior center finished with 14 points (12 in the second half), six rebounds and an assist as he shot 4-for-7 from the field. He also was strong from the foul line going 6-for-7.
“At the beginning of the season my free throw percentage wasn’t that great so the coaches made sure to implement free throw shooting into practice more to make sure we were knocking down free throws when it mattered,” Webster said.
This duo helped to score enough behind the strong defense that limited Brebeuf most of the game. Park Tudor held them to just 12 points at halftime and 15-for-49 shooting for the game.
Brebeuf did see strong play from senior Mason Grout who went 2-for-5 from 3-point range and finished with eight points. Freshman Simon Banks showed strong potential for the future as he finished with eight points, three assists and two rebounds off the bench. He displayed an ability to get into the lane and finish late in the game as Brebeuf made a minor run to close a double-digit deficit.
Brebeuf also had a rebounding display from senior Tarig Eldosougi, who finished with nine rebounds and seven points.
These contributions weren’t enough to push past the defensive zone that routinely stifled Brebeuf. It also helped Park Tudor had its own rebounding force in Sterling Satterfield as the senior put up four points and 10 rebounds.
Of course, it also didn’t hurt getting to readjust to familiar settings for the No. 6 Panthers at home as they improved to 12-4 on the season.
