Continue ReadingApple Valley went to Lakeville North tonight in a long awaited match-up. Much of the luster was lost on this match-up when the Panthers were upset by Rosemount recently giving the Eagles a fourth straight conference title. That said this game was still the match-up of the night statewide.
Tre Jones. Of course the brother of Tyus Jones. The starting PG who in the last dozen months has won a state title, started at PG for the United States 16 and Under squad, was offered by Duke and others, etc etc. Tre has a lot going for him, but can he be the main scorer on the team?
Tre has his chance to show people that he can. Jordan Bolton is no longer on the team, Gary Trent Jr is out with an inner ear infection, and tonight Cameron Kirksey was on the bench for much of the game in foul trouble. So the Eagles have had to go to Tre for points and he has definitely delivered.
Trent has been out for the last two games (Shakopee and Lakeville North) and Tre has put up a combined 69 points in those two games against ranked teams leading his squad to victories.
Towards the end of the first half the Eagles held a slight 27-22 edge on Lakeville North but the Panthers lost sight of Tre who moved to the corner, caught a pass, and drained a trey. Moments later he attacked a seam in the defense and got the rim taking contact and scoring amongst traffic for a 32-22 lead.
Just before the halftime buzzer Jones attacked with three dribbles getting to about 13 feet from the rim and then faded away to lift the shot over the arm of Carter Brooks. This was a fall speed attack turned into a tough fade away and Tre made the shot as the buzzer sounded putting the Eagles up 40-24 at the break.
In the second half Tre seemed to like the right wing as from there he attacked left, got the defender on his right hip, held the advantage with his strength and made a couple pull-ups. Jones finished the game with several foul shots earning 34 points with nine rebounds.
Can sophomore Tre Jones score for a team and lead them to victories at a high level? He did it for the Howard Pulley EYBL 16U club last spring and summer and he is doing it right now for the defending Class AAAA champion Apple Valley Eagles as a sophomore.
Notes
Brock Bertram. Scored 11 points this evening with his biggest scorers being a late game putback and some foul shots. Also liked the way he came away with boards in traffic and had a couple solid kick-outs for assists.
Nathan Reuvers. Nathan knocked out a trail three, a trail jumper, had two impressive dunks moving within the halfcourt offense to catch and complete, and the most impressive play may have been the chase down of Jones in transition swatting the shot off the backboard. Had 16 points and some solid highlights for Notre Dame who was there watching.
