Continue ReadingOn Tuesday night this week, New Albany fans crowded in the Bulldog’s gym and watched as one of their own hit a career mark. He wasn’t a senior, or even a junior. It was a sophomore, Romeo Langford. As other seniors and juniors around the state were scoring 1,000 career points, Langford was doing it at a much faster pace. One that is worth watching over the next couple years.
Against Evansville Central, Romeo finished with 31 points and hit his 1,000 career point mark. He has played 44 games at the high school level and is averaging about 22.7 points per game. He still has four games left to go in the regular season and most are expecting a major run in the State Tournament. He’s also got two more season and while it doesn’t seem like he’ll get to the very top, he should be able to find a place among the best if he keeps at this pace.
To put things into perspective, the state’s all-time leading scorer is Bedford North Lawrence’s Damon Bailey. At this point in his high school career he was at 1,509 points and finished with 3,134. Langford is just over 500 points behind his pace. However, if you take his current scoring average and add in some additional postseason games the next three years, Romeo Langford could be on pace to score around 1,362 more points giving him around 2,362.
Below is a look at the current scoring leaders list provided by IHSAA.org. Langford is having a special career already and is making noise even up in the Indianapolis area with his play down south. We have seen some recent entries in the last few years with guys like Trevon Bluiett (Park Tudor/Xavier) and James Blackmon Jr. (Marion/Indiana), and Deshaun Thomas (Bishop Luers/Ohio State). He could enter this list at some point in his senior season.
A few things will come before that time though as he will look to take over the school’s top career scoring record set by Chad Hunter at 1,463 points, which is likely to come next season. But first, he’ll look to make a strong run in the State Tournament. New Albany sits at 17-1 and will be the best team in the Sectional 15 at Seymour. Their last State Championship berth came in 1996 with a 57-54 in 2OT loss to Ben Davis.
