Early on, it was Skyline who took advantage thanks to some hot shooting from outside. Jack Ammerman hit a few jumpers and Brandon Wade was able to get inside consistently. At the end of the first quarter, Skyline led 13-11.
However, things changed a bit in the second quarter as Huron started to come back thanks to some tough defense and some key plays from Alec Anderson and Lawrence Rowley. At the half, Huron led 31-25 in a tight game.
In the second half, things remained tight. Skyline was able to take a 51-48 lead thanks to some big plays from Wade, but Huron would come back each time with some plays of their own. Finally, in the closing minutes, Rowley and Jack Smith were able to put Huron ahead.
All told, Huron came away with a 65-61 win.
Ann Arbor Huron
Devaughn Munson, 6-0 senior, G
A speedy point guard that can drive the lane and showed some ability to initiate an offense. He’s still developing his play at the rim and his defensive consistency.
Darian Root, 6-4 senior, G/F
A wing with a solid combination of athleticism and length. He can also run well in transition and showed a decent ability to pass. On one play, he made a beautiful bounce pass through a defender to an open man at the hoop from the wing. Root is ranked No. 72 overall in Prep Hoops Michigan’s rankings of the 2016 class.
Lewis Willis, 6-0 sophomore, G
He showed some real speed on the defensive end and was able to stay in front of his man for much of the night, despite having some tough matchups with Jack Ammerman and Brandon Wade.
Jack Smith, 6-4 junior, F
He’s a player that doesn’t have elite athleticism or size, but shows willingness to battle inside for space and rebounds. Along with that, he showed some real aggressiveness in transition when both driving and finding teammates. He also showed an ability to pass in the paint as well. Smith is ranked No. 63 overall in Prep Hoops Michigan’s rankings of the 2017 class.
Lawrence Rowley, 6-5 junior, F
A lengthy forward that is ability to use his length to create space both in the midrange game and under the hoop. He hit a huge three in the second quarter to keep Huron with Skyline. Made some huge dunks late in the game to put Huron ahead. Rowley is ranked No. 50 overall in Prep Hoops Michigan’s rankings of the 2017 class.
Avery Lewis, 6-6 sophomore, F
For much of the night, he consistently found himself in the right spot at the right time on the defensive end. This is because he stayed aggressive on the perimeter, was able to steal the ball through passing lanes, and could close out thanks to the use of his hands and his wingspace. Lewis is ranked No. 28 overall in Prep Hoops Michigan’s rankings of the 2018 class.
Alec Anderson, 6-4 junior, F
He made some key defensive plays in transition, including a huge block in a one-on-one setting. Anderson is ranked No. 64 overall in Prep Hoops Michigan’s rankings of the 2017 class.
Ann Arbor Skyline
Daniel Black, 6’4 junior, G/F
Strong forward that relies primarily on his interior game. Kept good defensive position on the perimeter and showed some consistency on the boards with solid control. Black is ranked No. 133 overall in Prep Hoops Michigan’s rankings of the 2017 class.
Brandon Wade, 6-1 sophomore, G
A steady guard that uses his handle and ability to stay low to get into the lane. He continues to show progress with his jumpshot and his passing off ball screens, which will ultimately decide how good he can become. He really came alive in the second quarter thanks to some really nice feeds inside and a huge three. All told though, it was his play in the third quarter that really separated himself. He was huge in transition and got two and-ones in the closing seconds of the quarter to put Skyline ahead. He finished with 21 points overall. Wade is ranked No. 7 overall in Prep Hoops Michigan’s rankings of the 2018 class.
LJ DeWolf, 5-11 sophomore, G
A smaller guard with a solid jumpshot and a pretty quick release. He hit a big three in the second quarter and continued heating up from there. He’s still working to expand his interior game, but had a big night from outside. He finished with 15 points overall.
Christian Knox, 5-10 freshman, G
A relatively quick guard that relies on his speed on the defensive end. He’s still working to expand his game on the offensive end and at using contact on the defensive end. Hit a huge three to put Skyline ahead to end the third.
Jack Ammerman, 5-11 sophomore, G
He remains one of the best shooters in the Ann Arbor area and one of the biggest contributors on his team. He consistently gets open in transition and has the ability to light it up from outside the arc. On Friday, he actually had a bit of a quiet first half, but turned to making passes and some big rebounds to help get his team back in the game. He finished with 14 points overall. Ammerman is ranked No. 34 overall in Prep Hoops Michigan’s rankings of the 2018 class.
Jeff Knight, 6-5 junior, C
Still a forward that’s a bit raw, but he has a decent length and wingspan and shows willingness to run in transition.
Kayron Rodgers, 6-3 senior, F
A solid forward with a decent wingspan that does most of his work inside. He also displayed a nice vertical on a few possessions and was able to use it to finish around the hoop. On the defensive end, he showed a decent ability to defend the rim.
