There were a few upsets in round 1 but none of the title contenders or even Top 10 teams went down in these classes. We’ll identify a couple match-ups that are interesting to watch heading into the 2nd round that’ll be played mostly tomorrow.
Class C
There was only 1 lower seed in Class C to win and that was the 17 over the 16 seed when Plainview went on the road to beat Ebarb.
17 Plainview @ 1 Elizabeth. This is a rematch of a district match-up in which Elizabeth came out on top both times. Separated by less than 6 miles, it’s sure to be an exciting cross town game.
Player to Watch – Kolby Friday (6’4 G/F, Elizabeth, 2016)
12 Calvin @ 5 New Living Word. NLW put up 124 points in round one and are very battle tested thanks to a tough schedule throughout the season. They are looking for their 3rd straight state title.
Player to Watch – Rashaan Proctor (6’0 PG, NLW, 2016)
Class B
Just like Class C, there was only one upset in Class B and this time it was the 19 seed ML King Charter over Bell City.
3 Anacoco @ 19 ML King Charter. ML King has been up and down but have all their pieces and get to host the defending champions. Would be a big upset but one on the radar.
Players to Watch – Will Reese (6’4 SF, Anacoco, 2016), Larenz Williams (6’3 G/F, ML King, 2019)
10 Hathaway @ 7 Grace Christian. Hathaway is looking to get passed the 2nd round while Grace Christian is looking to return to the quarterfinals for a rematch against Fairview.
Player to Watch – Trenton Guidry (6’5 F, Hathaway, 2017)
Class 1A
Common theme among the smaller classes, there was only one upset in Class 1A as well as the 21 seed North Central squad knocked off Covenant Christian.
9 Sicily Island @ 8 Hamilton Christian. This game has the makings of a showdown to get a shot at LCA should they hold serve versus Haynesville. Both teams have young talent.
Players to Watch – Camren Hare (6’2 G, Hamilton, 2017), Devion Dunbar (6’2 G, Sicily Island, 2018)
10 Tensas @ 7 Delhi. Game is being played at Oak Grove and is a district rematch that was played to a 85-82 win last time for Delhi who is 2-0 over Tensas.
Player to Watch – Grant Jackson (6’2 G/F, Tensas, 2016)
Class 2A
There was more action here upset wise as we saw… Two lower seeds win. Doyle knocked off Welsh and Sophie B Wright beat St. Thomas Aquinas.
10 Christian Life @ 7 Dunham. Dunham hasn’t lost at home this season and is 2-0 against Christian Life but district foes and having to beat a team again is tough. CLA has plenty of seniors.
Players to Watch – Ludovic Kader (6’0 G, CLA, 2016), Jordan Wright (6’4 G, Dunham, 2019)
15 Lakeview @ 2 Riverside. Who would have foreseen the two teams who met in 2A finals the past two seasons meet in the 2nd round. Maybe there is something with the 2’s here but Lakeview looking for revenge.
Players to Watch – Jared Butler (6’1 PG, Riverside, 2018), Cameron Pottain (6’7 F, Lakeview, 2016)
