Continue ReadingChris Vogt (Graves County HS) is an intriguing prospect from the Class of 2017. Though he shot up to 6-foot-9 early in his high school career there was a hesitation among HM programs.
There is no avoiding it, the power programs wondered about how thin the skilled big was. Last year Vogt tipped the scales at 180.
“I have gained about one inch over the year and I also put on about 30 pounds in the last year,” said Vogt. “That is helping me with coordination. I am not as lanky as I used to be.”
For extremely tall teenagers adding any weight (muscle or fat) can be a daunting task. Rarely do players still growing vertically tack on substantial weight. And recently Vogt was still growing.
With the added weight, predominately muscle, Vogt is noticing changes in his game.
“I finish a lot more and-1’s.”
Perhaps because his growth period is nearing an end, Vogt also sees his coordination improving.
Chris Vogt Recruitments
Currently Vogt has three Division One offers, but two are exceedingly active in the pursuit.
Middle Tennessee State and Western Kentucky both hosted Vogt this season. They each offered.
Vogt’s evaluation of Middle Tennessee went well. He saw some similar concepts in their offensive structure to his own team’s four-out, one-in.
“They were the first school to offer me,” said Vogt. “I went down last weekend and saw a game. I don’t think they really had a true big. They kind of had a stretch-four in the five.”
Also, Austin Peay hosted Vogt and his father.
“I didn’t really talk to them that much, because I had to leave before the game was over,” recalls Vogt of the Austin Peay visit. “It was a pretty good environment. Not necessarily a good crowd.”
Over the weekend the Governors of Austin Peay slipped into the OVC Tournament, earning the #8 seed over EKU. Speaking of EKU, Vogt heard a whisper last year, but the Colonels have been quiet of late.
The main big schools expressing interest in Vogt’s game are Purdue, Vanderbilt, and Indiana.
Samford is consistently expressing interest. They have not offered, but have evaluated Vogt multiple times in the last two years.
One other college in Alabama is making a big push for Vogt.
“I have talked with UAB,” said Vogt. “And their coaches. They said they are really impressed by my hands around the basket and that I play hard.”
The point of contact from UAB to the Vogt family is Associate Head Coach Jeff Wulbrun.
“He sends me highlight videos all the time and congratulation me on games I play.”
Vogt will wrap up his junior academic year with an AAU run, the Louisville Magic being his new team. Coaches that once dismissed Vogt as an option will get a second look. Considering his newfound weight and increased tenacity under the tin, these coaches will surely be impressed.
