What is the same is the millions of scores on Minnesota-Scores the outstanding score/schedule website (all say 0-0). Considering the amount of data running through there I am often surprised it is as consistent as it is. However, looks like that Y2K scare caught up to them for the moment.
What stays the same, let’s think.
- Trash talking before a game against an opponent you don’t know gets you no place (I’m talking to you tall Riverside coach who said his team would fly by JM)
- Minnesota basketball is better than Iowa basketball (Maple Grove joined AV in beating Iowa City West who in fairness is dinged up, Champlin Park destroyed Lincoln)
- The Wolves Shootout is still fun plus Jeff and Matt remain the nicest guys downtown
- Some people still tell us everything they are going to do all the time, and pretty much keep doing the same thing (and stealing pizza from the interns)
- Marshall is still rolling after that 19 point win over Windom and they’ve won nine straight
- I still watch all the bowl games during my two weeks off (I’m at 26 of 40 right now, 13 to go on the DVR, plus the title game next Monday)
- I kept the tradition of gaining five pounds of weight in the last two weeks of Christmas break through the help of Buffalo Chicken Dip, the Tap House Brothers food, and a dozen Christmas cookies a day
- Austin is still beating Mankato West
- Eden Prairie is still dropping close games (lost to Shakopee and are now 6-6)
- Gary Trent Jr is still getting buckets (scored 27 in the Target Center and is leading the state at just over 30 a game)
- North St. Paul is still improving (8-4)
- Farmington is still one of the year’s best surprises (8-3 after a 13 point win over Fridley).
- Class A is not changing, North is the massive favorite still. Spring Grove was really good up north over the break though (9-0, undefeated still).
- Class AA is still wide open.
- State’s leading scorer? That would be Gary Trent Jr. of AV.
- Leading Rebounder? Eric Staebler of Morris
- Leader in Assists? Brad Davison of Maple Grove
What is Changing?
- The Prep Hoops Network! New look, easier for us to use and cleaner for you to look at.
- The weather! Feels like winter finally
- Waseca, they lost Nick Dufualt to an ankle injury so they dropped a game to Waconia by a big margin
- The Vikings luck against the Packers
- Coon Rapids 91 North Branch 46. My Lord.
- JCC gets into the rankings and then falls to Pipestone Area. The JCC ranking will be changing
- Battle at the Lakes will be in May instead of April, that is changing
- Times are changing. Minnesota basketball is some of the best out there. Evidence is Tyus & Rashad playing on the same floor in the NBA. I expect about 3-4 more kids from the current high school level of Minnesota basketball to be in the NBA in the future as well.
- Am I getting fooled, or is Class AAA a bit more open than I thought it would be? DeLaSalle is 5-3 now and starting to catch a groove that Thorson wants them to fully be in come March. They have EP tomorrow.
- But is Class AAA more open than I thought? Maybe. Maybe. That section is tough and BSM showed that the Islanders can be beat. Remember that Henry, Delano, Orono, Waconia, BSM, and De are all in that section together.
- Class AAAA may have to squeeze Maple Grove in there as “top of the group” favorites. Hopkins and Apple Valley are on top, GCC showed us that the Crimson should be there too.
- Class AA will have a new number one after Braham knocked off Melrose. Braham was beaten by somebody else this year, are they the new number one? Look tomorrow.
- Second leading scorer in state? Jack Jenson of SW Christian. Bet you didn’t know that, or what follows.
- Leader in treys made? Andrew Israelson of Staples-Motley
- Leader in assist and block totals? That’s Michael Hurt.
