The 5’11 point guard is one of the best in the 2018 class for Indiana and since midway through the year last season, he has been the starting point guard for his high school team. He’s grown up quite a bit and quickly to help McCutcheon to a 14-2 record and one of the best teams in the state.
“I didn’t really have to do a lot because we had (TreShon Heard),” Phinisee said. “Coach (Peckinpaugh) told me that I need to be a leader and that is what I’m trying to do.”
Robert has been terrific in his role. His ball handling and pace setting plays perfectly into the personnel that McCutcheon has and he’s also shown great instincts as a defender.
“I feel like my team knows I’m a great defender,” Robert said. “I just try and get after people and get steals and transition buckets.”
This past fall, Indiana was the first to offer Phinisee. This January, he picked up his second off from Purdue. He’s already in the process of getting to know the two big in-state programs and recently he visited the Indiana Hoosiers for a game.
“It was a great atmosphere,” Robert said of his trip down to Bloomington. “It was my first game being down there. Great atmosphere. Best game they have played all year in my opinion. I really love the coaching staff and I really connect with them. I like how they get out in transition.”
Robert has his pair of offers from Indiana and Purdue but has also been getting strong interest from Butler and a little from Xavier. He’s likely to gain quite a bit of interest this spring on the AAU circuit as more and more schools start focusing in on the class of 2018.
