As soon as things tipped off, Ann Arbor Skyline roared out to a quick start. Early on, the big contributors for Skyline were Jack Ammerman, LJ DeWolf, and Kayron Rodgers. In particular, DeWolf connected on two three-pointers in the first quarter.
Unfortunately for Monroe, the team got behind pretty significantly at halftime. Skyline did slow down a bit in the second quarter, but at halftime, Skyline led 35-12.
In the third quarter, much of the same continued. Although Jalen Wilkerson hit a few key buckets for Monroe, it just wasn’t enough to keep pace with Skyline’s offense. In total, Skyline connected on four three-pointers in the third quarter and by then, the game was pretty much sealed up. All told, Skyline won by a final score of 65-33.
Ann Arbor Skyline
Daniel Black, 6’4 junior, G/F
He hit a huge three pointer in the third quarter when Monroe was starting to chip away at the lead a bit. Stepped into the shot with decent footwork and showed solid form. On the defensive end, he kept his hands active on the perimeter, showed a decent ability to face guard, and limited open looks. Black is ranked No. 133 overall in Prep Hoops Michigan’s rankings of the 2017 class.
Brandon Wade, 6-1 sophomore, G
Continued to show poise on the offensive end and consistent effort on the defense end. During the game, he didn’t display an outstanding shot, but he did show a knack to get a drive and bucket when needed. He was also really solid at forcing contact on the drive. Additionally, he showed some real desire when he chased down a loose ball even when Skyline was up 24 points late in the fourth quarter. Wade is ranked No. 7 overall in Prep Hoops Michigan’s rankings of the 2018 class.
JaVander Toney, 5-6 senior, G
Although he had a bit of a quiet night, he showed off a really nice handle and was able to find some open space to show off his jumper. Had nice off ball movement that got him open on most of those looks.
Sam Windsor, 6-3 junior, G/F
Had a nice reverse layup to score in the second quarter.
LJ DeWold, 5-11 sophomore, G
Did a nice job of finding open teammates inside. Displayed a really nice jump pass off the drive.
Christian Knox, 5-10 freshman, G
Though Skyline was up late, he was fighting hard on the defensive end and in transition. During one particular play, he used his speed to run down the court and was able to pass around a defender to find an open teammate. Finished with nine points.
Jack Ammerman, 5-11 sophomore, G
Had a really big game on Tuesday night. He didn’t make the athletic plays, but he was extremely productive on the offensive end. Whether it was moving without the ball, hitting a shot, or getting to the hoop, he did a nice job. As usual, he displayed one of the better shots from long range in the Ann Arbor area. Finished with 13 points overall. Trending up big time. Ammerman is ranked No. 34 overall in Prep Hoops Michigan’s rankings of the 2018 class.
Jeff Knight, 6-5 junior, C
Still needs to fill out physically, but he stayed moving on defense and was willing to play through contact on the offensive end. Early on, he had a rough fall to the ground on a drive in transition, but still got up and showed a lot of energy on the next play. Late in the game, he made a great feed out of the paint to an open teammate on the perimeter.
Kayron Rodgers, 6-3 junior, F
He was active defensively and in transition for much of the night. He was probably a bit too aggressive on some plays, but it did lead to a good number of deflections thanks to his effort and athleticism in tracking down the ball. Finished with 10 points.
Zach Trumble, 6-3 senior, F
He displayed plenty of confidence in his shot and connected on some big looks late in the game.
Monroe
Tevin Nickols, 6-2 senior, G
Over the course of the night, he got the chance to display a nice handle and a smooth fade away jumper. Solid use of his pivot foot to get space in the midrange. Finished with six points. Does need to work a bit on shot selection.
Fredrick Shipp, 6-1 senior, G/F
Displayed some quality athleticism and the ability to drive the lane. He does still need to fine tune his passing, but showcased some real speed. Hit a few long range jumpers as well.
Jalen Wilkerson, 5-11 senior, F
Had a nice drive inside to force contact and foul out of the half. Did a decent job of getting around defenders in the lane with his handle.
Dajon Mayes, 6-1 senior, F
Showed a lot of effort and control on the boards whether on the offensive of defensive end. He had no hesitation to play physically inside. Additionally, he also made a nice play in the third quarter on the defensive end that led to a Monroe score in transition.
Mikal Farris, 5-11 junior, G
He displayed solid control in transition with the ball and was able to keep the ball away from the defender and force a foul.
Marlon Martin, 6-1 senior, G
Often, he had some difficult defensive assignments, but he kept his hands in solid position and continued to force ball handlers toward the baseline on the drive.
