Pleasant Valley
They’ve been cruising all season, and we’ve somewhat taken it for granted, but it’s finally time to put them on the list. Off to a 12-0 start, the Spartans have been the most consistent team in the state so far aside from the Valley Tigers – could that be a 4A state title game prophecy?
Waverly-Shell Rock
After a sluggish 0-2 start to the season, the Go-Hawks (10-2) have run-off 10 straight wins. They are certainly back in contention in a loaded 3A field, and there’s reason to believe Austin Pyhfe, Camry Moore and Co. will be down at Wells Fargo arena again come March.
Mount Vernon
After stringing together six straight wins after a 2-3 start, it seems as though the Mustangs (8-3) have hit their stride. It all came to a boil last night during an 80-63 shellacking of Solon. The 80 points is a season for Mount Vernon.
West Fork
Jacob Kuhlemeier leads the way for the Warhawks averaging 15.1 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. And after losing to Forest City in a district final last season, they’ve come back stronger than before – racing out to a 12-0 start, winning their games by an average of 30 points.
Treynor
If there’s any team that reloads, rather than rebuilds, it’s Treynor (12-0). Every year, regardless off who has come or gone, they are among 2A’s best – this year certainly no exception. It’s Nolan Chapman’s team this seson, and the star guard is averaging 20.7 points per game. The Cardinals are truly one of Iowa’s premier hoops programs.
Down
Fort Dodge
Coming into the season we had high expectations of the Dodgers, and though they have not completely disappointed, we thought they’d be better than their current 6-5 mark. They’re beating the teams they should beat, which is great – but they have struggled against teams with winning records.
Urbandale
A very promising start to the season (3-0) has turned sour quickly for the J-Hawks – which have now lost seven seven of their last eight. The only win during that stretch was a 69-38 beatdown of a 2-7 Lincoln squad.
Maquoketa
A 7-1 start has given way to a current record of 7-5 – four straight losses now haunt the Cardinals. They will try and right the ship Tuesday night at Anamosa.
Central Clinton, Dewitt
The Sabers were looking good after the first week of the season, starting 2-0 and heading into a Solon game with a full head of steam. Then the Spartans derailed them, beating the Sabers by 22, and spurring a streak of seven losses in eight games.
Ottumwa
After exceeding our expectations early, the Bulldogs have hit a snag in their season. They started the season 4-4, but have since lost three straight – including an 18 point drubbing at the hands of lowly Marshalltown (2-10). Good news is the Bulldogs play next at 3A Keokuk, in what should be a very winnable game.
