The 6-foot 2018 Grandview (Hillsboro) sophomore point guard, is averaging 24.4 points, 6.3 rebounds, 6.2 assists and 3.7 steals per game.
A point guard with good handles that can create his own shot as well as scoring opportunities for teammates., Klaus said he has been working on all phases of his game. As a freshman he averaged 19.6 points and 3.4 rebounds.
“I’m shooting everyday as well as working on my handles,” he said. “I’m also in the weight room everyday to make me a better athlete.”
Klaus said he looks up to Kyrie Irving and Steph Curry, but says his family has played an important role in developing his game.
“My dad has influenced me the most,” he said. “He works with me every time I go to the gym, and is always ready to take me to shoot and teach me more about the game. I look up to Kyrie Irving and Stephon Curry. I like to watch both players handle the ball and create their own shot, while still getting there teammates the ball.”
After going 15-10 last season, Grandview is off to a 4-4 start this season with a roster that features just one senior.
“Last year, our team was very young,” Klaus said. “Our team worked very hard and by the end of the season, we were playing really well as a team. My coach (Chris Miller) is very positive and is knowledgable about the game. He knows what we need to do to win each game. Im looking forward to being able to play with my team and to play for my coach again this year, and for the next three years.”
After a strong summer on the AAU circuit playing for St. Louis-based Gateway, Klaus said his garnering some interest from a few mid level Division I programs, but doesn’t yet have an offer. He said playing on a talented Gateway squad helped raise his profile during the offseason.
“Playing for Gateway helped my game by making me play harder and smarter,” he said. “Playing against very good competition, every game, made my defense better.”
