With the amount of talent on Hopkins’ roster, you’d wonder how long it would take for them to run away with today’s game. But Chanhassen kept finding ways in the first half to stick with the AAAA power. Hopkins subs were frustrated coming out of the game, shaking their heads at a 20-20 tie. But the Royals offense is so high-powered, they couldn’t be contained for very long. The turning point may have been a sequence where Xavier Johnson was fouled on a 3-pointer AND Chanhassen’s bench was assessed a tech; he went to the line and hit 5 straight in the same trip. Hopkins had a 57-49 halftime lead.
Hopkins cruised away in the second half, terrorizing Chan in transition and building a 20-point lead. Coffey logs his 6th and 7th dunks of the day, casually. 8th-grade Blaise Beauchamp enters the game for Hopkins. Final score is 111-82, Coffey (28), Wright (21) and Johnson (13) lead the Royals.
Player Notes
Vinnie Shahid, Hopkins — You love to see seniors leading, and that’s what Shahid is doing with his talking on defense. Nice to see him so active. Looked good today pushing the ball, not allowing defensive pressure to faze him.
Mike Witthus, Chanhassen – Quality senior who had 9 first-half points to help Chan stick with the Royals. Can pull up in traffic and hit a crisp mid-range; I really like how his jumper looks.
Amir Coffey, Hopkins — What hasn’t been said about Amir? 5 dunks in the game’s first 7 minutes for the Gophers-committed senior. He’s using his size in a very assertive and effective way — something he really didn’t do at all as as freshman or sophomore. 16 first half points.
Trey Prince, Chanhassen — Junior who I liked for Chan. Split two taller Hopkins defenders on a fast break and made an improbable shot. Beautiful bounce pass to Bonk on a fast break. Drove baseline and hung in the air for an up-and-under score off the glass.
Jordan Bonk, Chanhassen — A capable junior who made sharp passes and finished a few really nice cuts. Curious to see how he develops into his senior year.
Xavier Johnson, Hopkins — Made an unusual 5 straight free throws in the same trip to the line (fouled on 3-pointer, immediate tech called on Chan bench) to help Hopkins build a double-digit lead. Showed great ball skills today with his paint penetration and subsequent kicks out to the wing. Had a couple nifty finishes at the hoop.
Simon Wright, Hopkins — Simon looked like his older brother Jake today, knocking down three triples. 21 points in a mix of long shots and finishes in the paint.
Keagan Williams, Chanhassen — Nasty pivot/pump that completely faked out 6-foot-8 Joe Hedstrom for a score. Didn’t do much else in the game, but that had to be noted.
