Continue ReadingPost-Christmas hoops events take off this Saturday and will last through Wednesday night. One of the top events will undoubtedly be the McClintock Holiday Tournament which features a minimum of eight potential top 25 teams, regardless of classification.
Here is a breakdown of opening round matchups in addition to a preview of some potential second round matchups:
In the first game of the event Dobson will take on Boulder Creek. The Mustangs—currently 6-2—are led by their senior backcourt duo James Clark and Amaury Matthews. They will face off against a Jaguars team led by their senior combo of 6’2” Matt Downey and 6’4” Nick Johnson, two players that bring a load of experience to the table. If Boulder Creek is able to hold on it may set up a potential rematch of the Paradise Valley Invitational against Apollo, who could play the Jaguars in the second round after their initial pairing against Campo Verde. The Hawks, who fell to BC 75-72 in their first game, are coming in hot winning their last five behind the hot shooting of their junior trio led by 5’11” Holland Woods.
The 1:00 PM game will feature Arcadia and Brophy Prep. While Arcadia lost it’s two most productive players from their state title runner up season a year ago, they have gotten off to a 7-2 start behind the production of 6’4” Elijah Sikora and 6’0” Max Moses. Brophy has struggled early but has some pieces that they can build around. Recently they had a solid win against Chaparral. The 2:30 PM game will feature one of the state’s best teams in Mesa who enters the game 9-2 with seven wins against potential top 25 teams. They will open up against Tempe.
The next quartet of teams will see Desert Mountain take on Cienega and McClintock take on Sunrise Mountain. While DMHS lost their main interior presence—Will Hannen—to injury, they have had a solid start. Despite their 6-4 record, this senior laden team has been very competitive through a tough schedule thus far. Cienega is currently sitting at 8-4 behind the strong play of 6’3” senior Isaiah Murphy. McClintock is 7-0 in the month of December and will focus on shutting down 6’5” Saint Mary’s bound Elijah Thomas who is currently averaging just under 18 points and 6 rebounds.
The final two games of the night will see Marcos de Niza faceoff against Chandler at 7:00 PM and Westview take on Desert Ridge at 8:30 PM. Chandler—who is led by ASU football recruit N’Keal Harry—scored a big win over Mesa Mountain View last week. Desert Ridge’s Timmy Allen may be the most productive underclassman in the AIA thus far and, while they are 5-5, they have been competitive. Westview also has a pretty productive underclassman with 6’3” freshman D’maurian Williams.
