Colo-Nesco – With already three wins under their belt, it’s not surprising that the Royals are 3-0, but it’s the way they have been winning that’s striking. They have wins of 48, 56, and 53. That’s an average margin of victory of 52 points.
Pella Christian – The Eagles are off to a sizzling start and have proven that they can hang with bigger schools in the process. The 2A school is winning its four games by an average margin of 17 points. Including a 12 point win over 3A’s Newton, and a win over a much-improved ADM squad.
Fort Dodge – It was evident to us that the Dodgers would be a formidable team in 4A this season. And so far, they most certainly have been. The wins over Indianola and Des Moines East were to be expected, but the 13 point win over always-good Sioux City East is what is eye-catching. All three Dodger wins have been by double-digits.
Algona – After a great season last year with then-senior and current Wayne State player Luke TerHark at the helm, it would have made sense for the Bulldogs take a step back. But instead they have continued to flourish. They have three wins of 38, 15, and 17 to start the season. Begging the question: Are they better than last season?
Muscatine – They were 7-15 last season, with a bright spot being future Hawkeye Joe Wieskamp – the state’s best 2018. It would appear the Muskies have returned from the sub par season ready to make a move into the 4A’s next echelon of teams. Wieskamp and Co. have started the season 2-0, with nice wins over Iowa City High and Prairie.
5 Down
Dallas Center-Grimes – It may seem a bit harsh to place the Mustangs on the downside of the list after two losses to good teams. But we thought they could have won one of the two against either 4A’s Urbandale or 3A power Pella. There’s still plenty of time for the Mustangs to turn into a state qualifier.
Roosevelt – With the addition of former Des Moines North standout Mihyu Thomas and the emergence of budding star forward Gatdoar Keuth we thought the start of the season may have been a little better for the Roughriders. Truth is though, they lost to two top 10 teams in 4A (Valley, Ankeny). They could come out better from the tough start.
Ottumwa – A bad loss at home loss to 3A’s Fort Madison to start the season was followed by another home loss to a rebuilding Urbandale squad. That’s not the way the Bulldogs wanted to start their season, especially at home.
West Marshall – They were 3-19 last season, but with three starters returning, an 0-4 start is a bit underwhelming for the Trojans. They have lost by an average margin of 31 points per game.
Waverly-Shell Rock – After a sterling 22-3 record last season, the Go-Hawks have already dropped two games in the early goings this year. Those losses come at the hands of a 4A school Waterloo East and 3A power Xavier, so it’s not panic-mode yet for the talented team.
