After another stellar season, an experienced and talented Amelia Academy team will be looking to make a run to the state tournament. They won their third straight VCC Conference Title, and anything short of that this season would be a disappointment.
“We want to win the VCC for the fourth straight time, and we want to make a deep playoff run,” Head Coach Greg Harris said.
Despite an early exit in the VISAA Division 3 playoffs last season, a state tournament run wouldn’t be a surprise for this group. When it comes to Division 3 teams in the VISAA, it’s hard to find one with as much firepower as Amelia Academy. They return two of their top scorers in Korey Turner and Imrane Amadou, who give them a solid inside-out combo. Turner is a three level scoring point who’s capable of getting his shot in isolation situations, while Amadou is a brute post who at 6’7 is able to control the paint on both ends.
Joining Turner in the backcourt is two returners in senior Trevor Lewis and sophomore Kam Harris who are both athletic impact players on both ends of the floor. Lewis averaged double figures for the Patriots last season, while Harris still has potential to unlock, but is a great next level prospect and is the fourth ranked point guard in the Vantage Hoops 2018 class.
Rounding out the starting lineup is 6’4 Max Morrow, a junior transfer from LC Bird with a solid all around game. Joining him as newcomers are shooter 5’11 Dajuan Edwards, and two bigs in 6’8 Jeremiah Huff and 6’4 Daryl Anderson. With a lot of talent, there are two keys that Coach Harris wants his team to focus on with the season getting underway.
“We have to improve our defense, and we want to avoid slow starts at all costs,” Harris said.
With their mixture of firepower, size and athleticism, Amelia Academy has all the tools to make a run at the VISAA Division 3 State Championship this season. They get their season underway with a tough matchup at home with Millwood on Monday.
