The Ohio high school basketball season starts Nov. 27. This week, we already took a peak at some of the top games before 2016. Here are some games you want to mark on your calendar when it changes to January:
Six Cincinnati-area games to watch in January 2016:
Middletown at Mason, Tuesday, Jan. 5: Middletown’s early portion of the schedule is heavy in Greater Miami Conference games and it will continue into the New Year. This game at Mason is one of four road games within the first two weeks. Watch for 6-10 sophomore center EJ Williams and the impact he makes in the post against the Comets. This marks Mason’s first game of 2016 the Comets want to start the New Year with a significant win. Watch for 6-5 junior guard/forward Matt King in this game.
Lakota East at Lakota West, Friday, Jan. 8: This is always a game to see every season. This will mark the second meeting between the district rivals this season. The teams play at East Dec. 12. Watch for Lakota East 6-8 senior wing/post Andrew Emrick in this game. Watch the Firebirds’ progress from an offensive standpoint in this game. West lost many close games a year ago so the maturity of this group is something to watch. Watch for 6-2 senior guard Jake Biehle, who averaged about 14 points last season and 6-6 senior Mitch Webber, who averaged about 10 points.
La Salle at Elder, Friday, Jan. 8: This Greater Catholic League South division rivalry game will be heavily anticipated at The Pit. Four of Elder’s first five games are on the road and this will be its first GCL South game of the season. Look for senior guard Frankie Hofmeyer to make an impact at home. This is the second of four road games to open January for La Salle. Keep an eye on senior point guard Jeremy Larkin as he plays his final game for La Salle at the Pit.
Premier Health Flyin’ to the Hoop High School Basketball Invitational, Jan. 15-Monday, Jan. 18: This is a must-see for basketball junkies at Kettering Fairmont. Too many games to list here but the 14th year of this event proves its reputation. There will be 75-plus Division I recruits in this event. Cincinnati-area fans will want to see Wilmington play Walnut Ridge Jan. 16. An interesting matchup of Roger Bacon vs. Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary Jan. 17 will bring back memories of the famous 2002 Division II state final which the Spartans upset LeBron James and the Fighting Irish. More info here.
Moeller at La Salle, Friday, Jan. 22: These two teams could very well be competing for the GCL South title and this late January game will undoubtedly be a physical matchup.
Purcell Marian at Roger Bacon, Friday, Jan. 29: Two premier area teams in Division III, this could very well be one of the most memorable games of the season. Each teams plays a tough schedule this season and will be to gauge their progress heading into the important month of Febuary.
