A continued look at some of the top Cincinnati-area Division I teams before the season starts Nov. 27:
Walnut Hills
2014-15 record: 19-6 (11-3 Eastern Cincinnati Conference)
Players to watch: Omari Peek (SF / 2018)
Hunter Davidson (F / 2018)
Kameron Gibson (PG / 2018)
Malcolm Moffitt (PG / 2017)
DJ Benson (G / 2016)
Adam Goines (G / 2016)
Michael Davenport (F / 2017)
Muhammad Lawal (C / 2019)
Coach: Ricardo Hill (61-16, fourth season)
Outlook: Walnut Hills is one of the top programs in the Cincinnati area each year under Hill, who is starting his fourth season with the Eagles. The youth and athleticism is excellent on this squad and there have been 12 players competing for playing time this preseason. Keep an eye on the 6-foot-5 forward Peek, who averaged seven points and four rebounds as a freshman and is on the radar for multiple college programs. Lawal is a 6-11 freshman center who is catching the eyes of significant college programs. Daniels is 6-foot-6 and Gibson is a 6-3 point guard. Goines averaged 5.3 points and 1.8 rebounds last season. Davenport appeared in eight varsity games last season. Davidson appeared in 17 games.
Bottom line: The Eagles have plenty of talented players and the question will only be how quickly the chemistry forms with this squad. Watch for the Dec. 12 game against visiting Elder to see how the Eagles respond to a veteran team. Walnut Hills may be a season away from making a deep run in the postseason but this regular season schedule will certainly have them ready for the sectional tournament in February. Keep an eye on their progress in January when they travel to Kings and Loveland to open the New Year and travel to North Canton Jan. 24 for an event. They close the month of January at La Salle on the 30th.
